Question about this year's tourney?
« on: Dec 27, 2008, 08:19 PM »
Not exactly who to address here?
First off I would like to state, that I appreciate this site and do not want to create any controversy, but have a legitiment question?

It looks as though the fish/species categories have changed from last year?
A few fellow members and I were wondering as to why this is?

Some states have better chances at different species than others. If certain species are removed it will be difficult for some states to compete?
Could  someone please elaborate on this?

Thank You, NHTF

This should answer your question....

http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=93418.0

Thanks you for the reply.  It does answer my question, however I know alot of members will be/are dissapointed as many of them, target species not listed in the tourney :-\ and some of the species that are lsited, are not common/or don't have much size in their state.

I do understand/appreciate the efforts of the people/moderators who run this site, I truly do :)
but it is just dissapointing to many of us who are so passionate about the sport :-\

Maybe in the future, The load could be divided amongst a few people,  a couple species per guy?
Again, sorry to gripe but I/my team belong to one of these states.

Ouch I just saw the list .  No crappie ,Bass or Pickerel ??   Those were some of the largest categories in the last few tourneys .  Why get rig of the popular categories ,But keep walleye that get little to no entries ?     OH well I know its hard work and we are all thankfull for what you guys do .

I like the Idea of splitting the load and keeping more categories . I for one would be happy to help out in any way and I'm sure many others would to .

As I previously stated some will be happy and some will be disappointed. I have to keep everyone in mind and that includes some who only have one species available. Even with that we have an Anything Category.
My original idea behind this tourney was for everyone to have fun. We are trying to offer everyone the opportunity to have at least one species. Next season it will change and again I expect some to be happy and some disappointed.
In this tourney we don't ask for an entry fee or for anything for that matter. All we ask is for everyone to try and have fun and friendly competitiveness.

Good Luck to Everyone !

Yes the categories will change every year.
A perfect example are the members in Alaska. They've told me the  only species they have are Arctic Char. I'll be adding Arctic Char next year.
Next year I may pull walleye and add pickerel. I may pull pike and add musky. You get the idea.
The only category that will definitely not change is the Anything Category.

Thank You for the response LoneWolf,

I honestly was/am not trying to be difficult or cause a problem, I just know about a dozen guys or so who are dissapointed that the trout/bass/pickeral have been removed.  They are some of the targeted fish in our state and are the ones we could possibly contend with.

I do appreciate your time and efforts. ----NHTF

lonewolf,  Are red ears going to be counted in with the sunfish or anything species?  I have a better chance at the red ear being big as compared to the sunfish.  Just wondering for clarification before the tourney starts if possible.  Thanks

Lone Wolf,
Thank for all you do ! It is the reason I am on this board and tourneys. Most tourneys always
have the same set rules ( regards to species). By mixing it up each year not only distributes
fairness ( because this tourney covers more then one state, not a single state). It also makes
it possible for lower states who have shorter seasons ( due to global warminig) a swing at
winning first places. These lower states have more opportunities for bass, pike, walleye then
trout ( water quality issues). Where upper states have more trout opportunities and time (less
global warmng).

The addition of shorter species and anything category also is a great idea. Last year I had several
fish that were consitently just a lttle shorter then what I saw on the boards ( but were good size
for the pond/lake) I was able to get to. Anything category should cover the rest ( can this include
turtles, hah,ha).

Just my thought for your reasoning or seasoning!!!

Good Luck to all !!

Thanks for all the hard work LW! Great job. This is my first ice season as an I.S. member and 1st tourney. I think the way you add and delete species will help keep the year to year interests up for all shanty members, plus the fact it actually got me out of my L.M. rut. As fun as they are and i have gotten some really nice fish it puts the pressure on to expand my  techniques, ponds, and presentation. After years of the usual slime darts, perch, and L.M.  I got into lakers and salmon up north last year and now I'm hooked.I think that most people who will have to change tactics and target new fish/lakes will come to appreciate what they get out of it. Thanks again!

I'm not sure how a limited number of categories is going to lighten the load if you just end up with them all as sub categories in the anything category.  It looks like you will still have the same amount of entries to sort through ? It will just make the anything category Huge and confusing .

Wouldn't the best thing to do for next year be having a thread for everyone to post which species than can catch in their state and choose the catagories according to the numbers?  You could also switch up the catagories each year while still being fair to others.

For example, in RI we have Pickerel, LMB, stocked pike (in less than 10 places), 'gills, crappie (few places with good populations though), perch, and stocked rainbow, brook and brown trout...few of which hold over.

So if next years rules changed, say walleye was replaced by pickerel and pike replaced by musky, my state, as well as everyone elses, would have the same chances as before.

Pretty much everyone has LMB, pickerel, perch, gills in their state.. the toss ups are basically just muskie, walleye, pike, lakers.

We here in BC (province) only have lakers in the list you mentioned. Please dont take those away as well.

I have a question about PMing your address to Lonewolf if you have been drawn for a prize. Does he confirm that he got your PM? I really have no way of knowing especially with the little security window that you have to fill out too. I realize that he also maybe too busy to get back to me as well but I don't know which it is as I heard that if you don't get a hold of him within so many days the prize goes back into the draw.
