Title: Just beginning to ice fish
Post by: Darrenschmidt43 on Dec 22, 2016, 01:22 PM
I have never been ice fishing before but I want to start. I've always thought about but I am committed to it now. I am trying to get all the things I need and I am wanting input for an ice auger. I am looking at the Eskimo 8" to buy. What are your thoughts on a good auger to start with?  Thanks for any help!

It depends on how much you want to spend?  I have a strikemaster lazer mag express 8 inch power auger and a 6 inch mora hand auger as a back up. I always recommend having a hand auger as a back up, you never know when something crazy will happen to your power auger like a broken blade or a frozen fuel line.  Some people prefer the new propane powered augers and other people like the battery operated augers.  Eskimo make a decent power auger.

I have heard some mixed reviews with propane. Some love it and other me are ready to toss it through the hole!  My concern with the battery ones is how well will a battery hold up in the cold weather?  Just what I have been reading and talking with others.

Strikemaster lazer hand auger is hard to beat if you are just getting into it. if you plan on running tip-ups or you get allot of ice, i would get a gas or electric...good luck

That would be a good idea to make sure you know the depth of the ice!
