Title: Locating Smallmouth Bass

Hi everyone,

      I've been thinking of trying to catch some smallies through the ice this winter, something I've heard very little about in my area (Quebec, Canada). From what I can understand people usually search out depths around 20-40ft, does this sound right? Anyone have any tips for locating them in the winter? What kind of structure to look for?

Rocks, and piles of rocks where weeds were.

4-20ft down would be a starting point.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out on my charts for that sort of structure... would be awesome if I could find that sorta cover on a mid-lake reef!!

most of our smallies in new Hampshire will come out deep or main rock piles

Most guys seem to get them on deep rock piles, but I have always done best on flats, around 8'-10' deep...

We found a lot of them on Fort Peck on Submerged humps, about 10 FOW. I found them the first time I tried my camera. I panned around and there were smallies hiding behind the submerged sagebrush! We started drilling holes all over that hump and had nonstop action for hours. They would only take a bare hook and live minnow though. It was fun.
