I can’t say what line is best, but I use a Uzuri Hybrid in 4# test on my trout rods, and have never been disappointed in its performance. Price is reasonable too!

It all comes down to what you're seeking for in line behavior or characteristics.

In general purpose, I like the hybrid/copolymer lines, preferably those of nylon and fluorocarbon mix.  Not too stiff nor too soft, just the right mixture sort of to say.  I like it when it comes off the spool on how easily it straightens out instead of retaining tight line memory coils.  Of course slack line will always have some sort of line memory coil, but some lines are more extreme on the memory than others. 

I like how line suppleness comes into play, especially when you wind the line onto the spool.  Some lines have more resistance to spooling nicely and snug.  I hate to see that little loop of loose line on my spinning reels. Of course equipment precision comes into play, but line behavior has just as much influence too.  The less user error influence I have to deal with, the more confidence I feel with a line's reliability.

Even after all of that, some lines do knot up better than others.  Yeah user error or attention to knot details has a lot of influence but, some lines do have less pigtails effect or just line deformity.  To me, line deformity from the knot usually means a weaker line.  We all know that usually it's the knot that fails but not always.

I’m a fan of 3# Sufix Ice Magic and can not find any faults. Tried Frost at twice the price and saw no difference.

I've been using the Berkley Trilene Micro Ice for years. Decent price and readily available here vs some of the other ice specific products. No complaints for the same basic applications you speak of.

Like others have said, it will really depend on what you like the feel of too. And what you are comfortable with when tying knots.

+1 on this... not sure if it is the "best"
line, but the 3-6# works well for my needs, which is mostly panfishing. It also ties/takes knots very well.

I don't see why your line choice would be any different from a spinning or baitcasting reel. I like 8# or 10# braid with a 4# mono leader, but that's just me.

I mainly fish for panfish while jigging so i dont get to involved in many line brands.trilene micro ice in 2 and 3lb has worked for me for 20+ years now.

I've caught plenty of trout and kokanee on it as well as panfish. Up to 4 lbs. While there may be some stretch on those bigger fish with the Micro Ice compared to other brands, it hasn't been bad at all. I run mostly 4#, maybe one or two rods with 3# and then some with 6# that go onto Jawjackers.

I am looking to try some on fly rods actually. I fly fish year round and only stray from that when I ice fish. From the sounds of it this stuff is popular in competition and great for distance and accuracy. So, combined with the strength and diameter, I am intrigued.

Never had an issue with 6# Berkley Sensation. Been using it since it came out and continue to use it.

I am a Braid guy.  BUT -It freezes up so I went to Floro.  I find P-Line Floro is limp and strong.  It works well for deep Perch and Craps.  30+ ft.

I have a couple big spools of Zebco and Shakespeare mono in various weights, cheap as dirt stuff.  Works fine, never lost a fish yet due to line failure.  Are there better and more expensive options?  Absolutely, but I am good with this.  Mono was used for decades before the new stuff, and a lot of fish were caught on them as well.

I use Berkley Micro Ice in 3# on my panfish rods and haven't had an issue yet. I've caught smallish (24-28") pike and 2.5-3lb bass without a problem.

I use some sort of braid with an 8# fluro leader on my walleye rod.

Most common line for inline reels is probably some kind of mono or fluoro

For me, on my inline reel, I use 2 lb Maxima Ultragreen (mono)


On most of the rest of my reels (spinning), I run a mix of Fireline Micro Ice (Crystal) w/ some kind of leader or straight fluoro (lots of good options including some of the 3G or 4G fly tippet) or mono (mostly Maxima Ultragreen + Sufix Ice Magic).

My rule is 3# flourocarbon.  Most of the times I am fishing in 10-25 ft of water.  Rarely go deeper than that because of the threat of killing panfish.  Pros will say shallow to go to 2# mono, and deeper than that to go to either flourocarbon or braid.  I fish lakes that have northern, so not going to risk the 1# upgrade.

If I am fishing walleye - then its a spinning reel and either flourocarbon and braid mixed in.  Started using more braid last year and going to continue that trend.  6-8# test on either of the line.

It can make a difference with fluorocarbon. An 8 or 10 lb fluoro sometimes falls off a spinning reel spool in coils when you don't want it to. That can't happen with a baitcaster.

I'm using baitcasters on my outside rods this winter. Braid freezes outside and 8-10 lb fluoro is easier to control when the spool is contained on each end.

he asked what weight lines so I told him the sizes
yesterday a package came in the mail from Fish USA
told the wife I did not order anything so I opened it up and there new line in the package
2 spools of maxima and a spool of sufix advance

I mostly used braid last year. It really helps to have a rod with big eyes when fishing outside with braid
