The King is making ice
« on: Jan 22, 2013, 07:12 AM »
Just got back from a hike up Cat Mtn; watched the mist rising from "His Majesty"

The Artic Blast coming tomorrow thru Saturday will probably make 1st ice by the weekend.

Anticipation is building; let's not have any "swimmers" this weekend.

Living in close proximity to the lake, I  know every productive area from Black Mtn to Basin Bay; I've fished it for 30+ years

I'll wait until there's 3+ inches of ice; there's too many "spring holes" that can be problematic

Use common sense; be safe

Def making ice, but this wind is not helping things.  Looked like there was a skim on MDB this a.m, but now it's open.  Also looks like the ice has receded at Harris and Huletts compared to this a.m.  All that being said, I'm also hopeful that it won't be much longer before we get onto some of the bays.

I don't know of any springs in LG that are shallow enough to affect the thickness of the ice.

There are some areas that are notorious for thin ice because of current; between Speaker Heck Island and Assembly Point and between 14 Mile Island and the shore near Shelving Rock for sure, other spots in the narrows but I don't get up there much.

This afternoon I checked around the docks in Diamond Point and there was no ice execpt over in a very shallow bay, water still needs to cool a little more the the wind needs to die.

Guys will be out on Huddle by Friday, maybe Thursday; every year (when they can) a few take their chances on 1.5-2 inches there it seems.

I am hoping for some safe ice by the weekend.  I havent been out yet this year and I would love to get onto the King.  I only had the chance to fish one day last year and didnt catch a thing.

nuts!!
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

You could see for yourself here ;): http://wnyt.com/article/12541/

The wind picked up and a couple big holes opened in the middle during the morning; looks like they buttoned up, it's white there now.

I was wrong, still alot open near the Village, just looked different when the sun went down; I thought it stayed too windy to refreeze, that's what opened it in the first place.
