i'm talking "still about half the lake has some ice" fishing open water, what baits would you use for channel cats?

Dead minnows or fresh cut bait. Like pike, the cats feed at ice out on all the dead fish that shows up.
 A killer bait would be some finger mullet from down south, about 6"-8", cut in half.
 I always bring a few pounds home after surfcasting the southern shores on vacation. Just freeze it and keep it till next year. :tipup:
