Title: 2013/2014 Loughborough Ice Watch
Post by: KtownIce on Nov 29, 2013, 09:24 AM
This may be premature but I am guessing ice up will be early this year.  Early enough for fishing by Christmas I am hoping!
Are there any resident members up by Loughborough who can give us updates + pics like last year?

Cheers
A

Dont worry I will be doing my daily updates with pics once we get something to report, lots of steam coming off the water of the west end this morning but no ice.  Around the launch on Division st there is a skim of ice, and the dock is out by the way.

What you need to do Rick is setup a webcam on your porch and we could have a 24/7 view of the west end!

Didn't get out,
Got to the Finkles launch and it was blowing hard and the waves were rolling in, so we called it off.

Hey

bigbassmon gave me the heads up that the west end had a skim of ice so drove over to take a look.  At the very west end in the shallows (you can't see it in the pic its off to the right)its iced over. By the launch its still wide open but there is a thin ice skim starting around shore. Still weeks away but a good sign for sure...

Got out onto Loughborough a couple times last year, really enjoyed it!

Coaxing those lakers up from 90+ ft was a challenge though...think a lot of us were using white tubes close to bottom..

Appreciate the updates, so stoked!

coming along nicely, the area you see in white is ice that was there prior to the snowstorm and in the middle where is looks like water is acutally a thin layer of ice so straight out from the launch its iced over shore to shore.  Before you get too exicted the ice is super thin and the slightest bit of wind will break it up but on a positive note it froze up after the snow so atleast it will have a chance to freeze quicker than the snow covered stuff.
90% of the west end is still open water but its cooling quick, you can see in the pics the heat coming off the newly formed ice, out over the open water the fog is so thick you probably couldnt see a foot infront of your face.

Another -20 night out there last night, won't be long now before some crazy (possibly me) goes and checks out the laker grounds.  So good time for a few reminders...
-Its Dec 17, last year first ice on the west end was Jan5th ish then it went away for a week or so, the two years before that it was Jan 13th-15th.  Yes its been cold but how the ice forms this time of year is uncharted territory for most unless your 80 yrs old and remember walking to and from school, uphill both ways, in 4 feet of snow.
-Spud your way out, this is even more important on Loughborough because the drop offs are steep it goes from 4fow to 40fow in the span of about 10 steps. Floater suit or lifejack, ice picks are pretty much a must this time of year.
-This lake is open for lakers year round so there is no rush to get out there.
-Respect the homeowners by the launch, dont park stupidly, no excessive noise, dont leave garbage etc etc. The last thing we want is to have someone start calling the bylaw enforcement.
-Respect the resource. For this zone its a 2 fish possession limit for lakers.  Not 2 fish a day until your freezer is full, its 2 fish total.
-If you are going to post a report give honest and accurate ice condition, if your not sure or did not measure the ice thats fine just mention that so no one has any false security.
-And finally, the first time this ice season you see a trout rocketing up from 30 feet away to smash your bait try not to crap your pants!

I took a drive yesterday by the west end ( loughborrow drive ) and it is still open water . Hopefully things will harden up in the next couple of weeks ... off till jan 6th , would be nice to get in a couple of days on the ice before having to go back to work .

Great advice.  If I may add another point, bring a spare set of pants in case you are unable to follow the last point. LOL!

There was open water to the east of the west end launch in the morning but the entire area by the launch was ice covered, may have looked open because it was new black ice. I went back in the afternoon and it was ice covered as far as I could see.  And after last night I think you will be hard pressed to find open water, unless of course you actually stepped out on this newly formed ice, then you would find open water pretty quick.  The biggest enemy right now is wind, especially anything coming from the east, if it starts to blow it could rip the new ice open and we would be back to square one. I might take a bit of a walk out on Thursday and give it a couple good bangs with the spud over 10-15fow.  I wouldnt advise it but judging by past experience someone will be out there over 40fow by wed or thurs if the nights stay cold and the wind stays down.  Take a look at last years thread, there was a pic of the first brave soul out there on jan 5th or something and if you scroll up you will see a pic of open water two days prior a stones throw from where he was standing.

**Edit**
Well I think I just jinxed us, checked out the window and the wind is blowing form the east and its snowing hard, worst case scenario  >:(

Looking out my window just before dusk it is now snow covered and looking very tempting. Again as JZ said, it's not ready!!!! We joked earlier today saying there will be someone out there tomorrow. I HOPE NOT!!! I am constantly looking out, worried that someone will try. Hold off!!! Not worth a couple fish.

The west end is capped as far as the eye can see, but who knows how much ice is under that snow. Not worth the risk right now, we have had 4-5 inchs of snow over the last 36hrs which slows down the icemaking process.  It will be a few days atleast before I venture out there.

Any idea how the ice at Loughborough has held up?

Post by: JZ on Dec 22, 2013, 11:01 AM
Bad freezing rain here too, but it hasn't got above zero in sydenham area, there will be a lot of slush on top but this weather wouldn't have hurt the ice, still making ice just slower than if there was no snow cover.  As soon as this slushy crap freezes I will got out and punch some holes to check conditions.

Just had a report of 4-5" over 80ft off boat launch at west end. I haven't been out but I still see him which is a good thing. JZ will be out there shortly and will have a report when he gets in.

Just set up on Lobo couple hundred ft from the launch. 8inch of half white half black over 35_ 40fow.
Update-
No fish for me but I did see some caught so that's a good sign.  I spent 4.5 hrs in 35-47 fow and didn't mark a single fish. Finally moved out to 77 fow (from the launch that would be ~500m south east) for the last hour and started marking fish, had one or two chasers but no bites. Still had 6 inch of ice at 77 fow again half white half black ice.  There were about 5 or 6 groups of people out there including a few guys on sleds. I suspect it will be a zoo out there tomorrow and into the weekend.  Play safe it's going to be a loooong season, this is the earliest I have ever been on  Loughborough  by two weeks!

Also a reminder to spud your way out, although the ice was solid all the way out to 77fow for me there were some monster holes that people had spudded out.  Like Iam talking 16-20in diameter holes.  I didnt my best to put the ice chunks back in any of the ones I saw so it will freeze back up quicker but it will still take time for it to be 100% soild.

I was out yesterday with couple of friends. We were in 100 feet of water. It was very slow.
I ended up going  1/2, seen only other 2 fish landed few hrs we were there.
I caught it on a bucktail jig (Blue head, white and black fur) tipped with a dead shiner.
We were able to mark fish all day long they just werent really biting
Here are few pics

Well guys the morning view at 9:30 from my lookout is 4guys including two clams, I imagine anywhere from 40-70 fow out from the ramp. Watched one guy head toward opp. Shoreline from ramp. Was not there long and headed back where the others were so I can't imagine the ice is good there yet. Tread carefully guys. Looks slushy out there now but with cold temps tonight, everything should tighten up nicely. Myself, I'm gonna give it another day or two. Let's see some posts if you guys out are on here.

I was out this morning at first light and can say that there was only 3 inches of black ice with 2 inches  of crappy white ice on top @ 90FOW.  Lots of marks but nothing wanted to play and at the 3 hours mark I headed off to another lake for bluegills.

I wish I would have checked the thread before going out this morning because I think we were set up near a couple of you guys and would have come by to say hi.  Was that you MegaRam playing fetch with the dog?
Hope you guys had some luck out there it was a little slow for me, went out for 3 hrs and went 1 for 1.  Had a couple other chasers but that's it.  In all fairness I didn't put too much of an effort in, it was a little cold so just stuck in one area most of the time. A nice clean 3lb eater. Got it on the old standard, white tube. In approx 92 fow.

Hey JZ,
Yeah that was me.  I stayed to 1330 and marked about 20 fish, and no takers. They did come off the bottom about a foot or two but nothing higher then that.
I might go to Dog lake tomorow or thurs. ( not sure yet ) depends on the severity of the hang over. lol..

I was in the clam kind of in the middle of everyone....... the 2 guys that pulled on the auger for 15 minutes... anyways... we marked 10 or so fish....no bites... and they barely came off the bottom with the exception of 1 that came up about 5 feet.  Went and caught some crappie in the afternoon.

Oh well a slow day of fishing is still better then a good day at work, next stop BOQ for some walleye fishing....

Hey thanks Makaro, sounds like a fun spot..

Only concern is parking, buddy in this thread (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=141172.0) says that there really isn't any parking at the end of lakefield.  I don't wanna piss off anyone, think it's fine down that road?

I have not yet been out to lobo this year but am going tomorrow. i like to fish out in the 100-110fow range about 200-300 yards east of the boat launch. I would just like a general idea of ice thickness out that way if anyone has set up out there in the last couple days.

ECB, what time you heading out?  I have some time in the morning.  I want to check out my ice 35 against yours.  Transducer is making weird signals on wide beam and would appreciate comparing.

Let me know.  I will be out there in the blue Kodiak Clam wearing the red Mustang Survival suit.

Cadeuses, hey man i will be taking a buddy out for his first time fishing for lakers tomorrow. I will be parked by 0700 and set up and the heat blastin probably by 0720-0730. I will be in the same blue clam hut and i picked up a bright orange mustang one piece floater so i will be hard to miss. Come on over and bring the bird and we will do some comparisons in the hut. It will be nice to catch up again after the open water season. I will be far east of the boat launch.

I was over 90-100 fow on tues and there was lots of ice, 9 plus inches and its been brutally cold the last 3 days so I wouldnt be surprised if you were close to a foot by tmo.  If you are in a pop up tent keep an eye on the forcast 30 km winds, gusts in the 40s could make set up and tear down challenging. I was going to go out saturday but will hold off until sunday because of the wind.

Hit the lake this morning and had her all to myself till about noon. When I finally got the auger started it was about 10.15 and had my first on ice by 10:30.. After a double chaser. Had quite a few more marks, a couple follows but that was it.(77'). At 11:30 decided to make a quick move before heading in (104'). Again after a struggle with the auger, was set up, and another fish on by noon. After a few more marks but no takers, I had to head in. Ended up with my limit anyway, and two missed hook sets. Lots out there. Ice was easy 12" and making noise steady so it's building. Good luck to all going out on the weekend. Remember to clean up afterwards.

JZ, nope, never caught any probably cause I wasn't trying for them.  I'm usually fishing deep, anywhere from 60 to 120 FOW on West Loughborough.

Lots of ice on the lake today... at least 10 inches where I was (44.359766,-76.561534 google maps).  Marked fish from about 0730 till about 0800, then they disappeared.  The wind blew me over around 1030...  >:(   knocked over the bait pail... lost all the water... gave the live ones to ECB.

Hopefully he can make something bite them.  Packed up and headed in.  Will get back out there again once the infernal wind dies down a bit...

Cheers.

WOW, that was some crazy wind out there today. Lakers were quite lazy too, i really only had 1 or 2 chasers that followed it a good 60ft... the rest would chase for about 10 feet and stop and back down to the depths. I will never set up the pop up in those kind of winds ever again. Thank you Cadeuses for helping me set my shanty up this morning as it would have been impossible by myself. I almost meltled the popup as well. I ended up getting out when i heard Cadeuses stuff blowing around but just got my foot out the door and then the side blew in and came about one foot from my 20lb'er propane tank and burner that was cranked up! I got to it just in time to turn it off. Needless to say the shack came down after that and i just dealt with the extreme winds till 1215 and called er quits. Now that i got the skunk outta the way early i'm ready to get back into some good Laker fishing this year. It is always fun to be on the ice nonetheless.

A lot of nice kit but when i go to loughborough all i really use is 3" white tubes with a minnow head jammed up inside the body of it. I WILL NOT use anything else as it worked so well for me last year. I think i iced between 25-30 trout last ice season with this method. Just be persistent and it will pay off.

Hey good to meet you mega ram, let us know how you made out on Dog lake.

Was out today for 3.5 hrs had a handful of chasers but only 2 bites and was lucky enough to get both of them.  Both fish came in 85-87 fow, first one (3lbs) on a white tube, second (~2lbs) got on a set line with a jig and a minnow.  My goal today was to get one on the set line because I picked up a HT Ice Rigger the other day and wanted to try it out.  Didn't actually get to see the flag trip and the fish take line because I was right there when the fish hit adjusting the depth, I watched on the sonar as the mark came up to the bait then the rod tip started to jiggle a bit.  The fish must have just sat right there and ate the minnow because the line didn't move an inch so I just grabbed the rod and hit him.  Wasn't a big fish but fun fight on a Med Lite rod.
Here is a pic of the 3lber, sorry for the gory blood scene but I always bleed them right away then knock them out, makes for much tastier trout.

Well after the skunk yesterday, I took a break from the lake today to hit Quinte for the morning bite. When I got back there were a few guys out, and also a couple permanent huts were on there way out just after I pulled in the driveway. Looks like an awesome day out there, and even better tomorrow. For those heading out, hope the bite is better than it has been the last couple days. Me... Goin back to the bay. Went 3/4 today with quite a few marks where I was. Gotta get the last one in before the rain comes.

For those of you heading out today, walk softly..puddles galore. Got word from my neighbour yesterday there was 15". He was near two vehicles parked together.. Yup, can ya believe it? Anyway, they had a couple on Dead smelt, nothing big. The one vehicle was back out this morning when I got up, but just left (8:00 a.m.) either because he had his limit, or heard some nasty sounds around him.lol, I would say the latter. Anyway, if going, I would say please refrain from driving on, not only for safety sake, but to save the shoreline access for days to come.
Good luck people!!!

Well it's been a while Since I or anyone else has posted here. I very seen many out in the past few weeks ,me included but all is quiet. So either the bite is hot and it's hush hush, or it's off and nothing to report. Well I put in a couple hrs Saturday morning, and again yesterday afternoon and things were quiet. Only marked a couple on both outings but did manage 1fish both days. In the past, I had been getting fish on the norm, white tubes but occasionally would drop down a Live Target Golden Shiner as they seem to be hot on Simcoe. Well I gotta say both fish came on this bait, and with a very aggressive SMASH to my surprise. I've heard word that fish lately have only been coming on dead smelt so I was happy to jig a couple up. Imagine once this lull passes, and the late season bite picks up, I will be able to put the bait into action a little more. For those that have not tried it, might be worth a change if old faithful isn't firing them up. I was using the smallest size in silver/blue.

I was out there two Saturdays in a row before yesterday. we were fishing 100 feet. Marked quite a few fish. Most chasers came on white tubes and xzone swammers. Tried dead smelts as well to no avail. They would chase it 5-10 feet and then give up. ITs my first year laker fishing so i am not sure whats up.
Needless to say i was skunked both days....my friend lost one at the hole.
A question for you guys that fish this lake more often then i do. What kind of minnows do you guys use? Shiners or mud minnows?

Myself, I use the Live Target Golden Shiner, smallest size. These baits are killer down on Simcoe. If the fish don't hit them, it DOES draw there interest!!!

Another one for the rattle bait, fish was just under 4 pounds. I've got the silver ford truck with duck decal in the back window of any of you guys wanna come say hello next time. Thinking about trying it again tomorrow. (http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u645/Icejunkie33/5670FC18-CE84-4E86-8AD8-6D8436211CC1-3663-000002CD429F34FD_zps517c1c14.jpg)

Was out this afternoon for a few hours, marked a few, had some interested, but no hits, seem to come in look and leave.  Auger is broke (waiting for parts) , had to spud an older hole to boot....lol

Nice to see some trout getting caught on lobo!  Maybe they've wised up to the white tubes.

Well I finally got out there on Sunday, damm that ice was thick! Fished for a couple hours in the afternoon, only marked a couple fish, one of them chased a bit then took off. I was in about 86 FOW, anybody else getting them? should I be deeper?

Fish O
I was out the past  few days and had same issues, Marked some , they'ed come in aggressive and then bail, tried hard lipless shad bait, tubes and jigs, nothing. I helped 1 guy yesterday land a 3lb, he was using smelts on the bottom, landed 1 and lost 1. Looks like the weather is about to make another big change so hopefully by Friday things change. I fished between 56fow to 103 fow.

By your wide depth range I'd say you moved around a bit Tim. The bite has been slow and it's gotta change soon. This year for most has been as funky as Quinte, with the locals (excluding me) finding them. All season long I've been seeing quads going past the house , down the ramp, and heading east. Sure it's to get away from the walkers, but I heard word that the fishing was better down there. Who knows, it's a bit of a hike, and I wasn't about to try drive it with the truck, although it's probably safe. Seen a few guys do that too.lol. Anyway, still a few weeks yet so Here's to hoping.

I was out on Friday afternoon, a little windy and no fish caught. Having a real hard time at Lobo, only even marked about 5 or 6 fish over 4 hours. 2 chased a bit again then took off.. Was using white tubes with minnow, also tried a few other lures but no action. In about 87 fow. Ice was really thick, maybe almost 2 feet. Pleasantly surprised to find there was not much snow on the ice so the walk was easy at least.

Hope somebody else has better luck than I do

It doesn't on Loughborough Lake , that's the best part about this lake. Now only to figure out where to put the shack in the summer.
