Custom Rods recommendations
« on: Jul 10, 2008, 09:45 PM »
Just wanted to see any and all input on custom ice rods.  Looking for something different next season.  So if you have a website of a custom rod maker or like a particular brand name rod.  Let us here it.

Thanks

Some of the best ice rods I have ever seen and that is a lot of them.  E-mail Gregg at [email protected]   I have the thorne bros ice rods, the st. croix ice rods but none of them compare to my ice rod from Gregg.  Will be getting another before this winter.  He also makes rods for open water and I have bought 2 of these so far and never seen anything any better.

Scotty's Custom rods
http://www.scottyscustomrods.com/customrod.html

Austin Custom rods
http://www.lobybaits.com/index_files/Page956.htm

Jason Mitchell rods
http://www.jasonmitchellrods.com/ice.html

I have had the pleasure of using both the Scotty's and Austin rods. I was going to order a couple of the Jason Mitchell walleye sticks towards the end of the season last year although after seeing Erics and Olivers Scotty's and Austins, I didn't take long to decide what rods I wanted for this winter.

Hope this helps
Andrew

I have used the Thorne bros rods, the st croixs,m and just aboot all of the other rods, but the ones i love the most are the black rapala rods. they have a great action similar to what you would find in an open water rod. they have a very fast action tapering to a heavy butt end that allows you to fight the larger fish you invariably hook into while panfishing.

Thorne Bros are just a bit to expensive for me...Almost $100 for a rod shipped to my door?? I can buy three St.Croix Rod and suitable reels for them at the same price. I really like the Rapala rods as well. Actually, my first two ice rods were made by Rapala. Awesome rods and plenty of backbone when fighting larger fish such as walleye and trout. For pannies, I like all my St.Croix. Scrapped most of my Frabill junk exept for a few panfish poppers and sensives...

No doubt I will jumping on a three new custom rods this season. I already have the reels for them. Stay tuned and I will take some pictures for ya.

I've never purchased a nice custom rod.  I was looking at one of the websites that was suggested and noticed that the rod handles (made of cork) did not have any rings to mount a reel.  Was this a picture of an unfinished rod or is there a way of mounting your reel that I'm not aware of?

That's the way I prefer them. I then use good electrical tape or tommy tape to put the reel where I want it for proper balance. Some people also use hockey stick tape to attach their reels.

Is Scottys Custom Rods still in business? I can't get his web site to come up. Or is the web site just having problems right now?   I was thinking of maybe ordering a rod.          Thanks for any info if anybody has any.

I've been building my own the last couple years.  I get fly rod tip blanks from a local builder here and build the rod from there.  Turn my cork handles, use decent guides (I over size them space them as I like) and add a hook keeper.  This way I get the rod length and action I want with a great quality graphite blank.  All for ~$15.

I couldn't get his site to load either, probably some server difficulties or site work. He sells rods on Ebay as well. http://stores.ebay.com/SCOTTYS-CUSTOM-RODS-AND-MORE

I know a guy that builds custom rods. I've got some of his rods for hard and soft water. He makes a really nice rod and makes it exactly as you like.  Company is Rovic Rods. If you're interested I can get his contact information for you.
