has anyone ever tried using small perch or bluegill as bait on a tipup and if so how did it work?
-
It's illegal in Wyoming
-
I know it's illegal, in NH, but in florida I used bluegills for bait and have nailed tons of bass over 5 pounds.

It is legal in Michigan and I use them to catch pike. Out of 15 or so pike that I have had looking at the perch, only one swam away without attempting to eat the perch. I have also had medium bass check them out but I am sure that they didn't hit due to the size of the perch that I use 7-9 inches.

I use them here too and do great with bass and pike.

Three years ago a guy in our group caught a 23 lb. 44" Pike on a 6" perch he jigged up earlier in the day. He swears by em'. They work better either dead or knocked a bit silly before putting them on the tip-up.

it's legal here, we can't use crappies though...

I've tried perch with no success but one time I put a small bluegill on and my son caught a 21 inch largemouth.
-
Believe it or not I actually caught a perch on a small bluegill I had baited a tip-up with. It wasn't a very big perch. When I brought him in half the bluegill was out of his mouth. The bluegill was about 4" and the perch was about 10" I have started to use small gills and perch for bait on my tip-ups hoping for bigger fish :)

Didn't see this when you posted last year Gloveless....Danderson is correct, they are perfectly legal in Mass. I've used them several time to catch some gators.

I Ohio, it is illegal to use any game fish for bait. And I think perch is considered a game fish. Not sure about bluegills.

I use perch all the time. Jig them up with pimples and rapala jigs. It's illegal to sell them as bait but it is legal to use them as bait by any licensed fisherman, I looked it up several years ago when I started using them. I have caught ridiculously small fish on bait that is bigger than anything sold for pike and I have no fear of using even a seven or eight inch perch for bass. Caught a sixteen inch pickerel on an eight inch perch two years ago. Free bait too, can't be beat at todays prices of shiners. Will never buy bait again except when night fishing.

i know it works on pike and i caught a bass on a perch in the summer

Perch legal in mass I fish them all the time

For NoDak.
Yellow perch eyes and trout and salmon eggs are
legal bait. The use of other game fish and parts
thereof is illegal.
