IMPORTANT!!! Snow insulating ice
« on: Jan 26, 2007, 09:42 PM »
Not an expert by any means. Fished pond in Frewsburg. Drilled holes thursday water poured out from snow weight. Good 3 inches deep on top of ice. Had near zero temps, and still the water did not completely freeze overnight. We ended up with 2 inches of clear ice, 1 inch water, 1 1/2 inches grey ice, and 1 inch clear. Chautauqua on Thursday appeared the same. We drilled 1 hole near shore 3 inches of ice(Mayville), but lots of snow further out. From the reports I am reading seems to be the same everywhere. It will hold you, BUT don`t feel it is really safe yet. Hopefully next week. Ice covered with snow did not thicken at all even with near zero temps, surprisingly. Be safe!!
