Sometimes I use night crawlers under a tip-up. I have caught quite a large number of perch and walleye on the set up. The drawback in using them is it is hard to keep them alive at temperatures below freezing. They only stay alive for about an hour under water with the colder temps. Couple of times forgot to put them in a warm spot ended up with a crawler sickles. Shiners keep much longer and are more active at the colder temps but when fish are negative crawlers sometimes are the trick to get them to bite.

Extremely effective for rainbows under a tip-up in shallow water.  I also will use a half a crawler on a jig for crappie and perch.

Depends on what you are fishing for...crawlers outfish minnows for trout and panfish, minnows are better for bass and the toothy critters.

I have actually been thinking of trying crawlers. the bite has been so slow where I go maybe this is the time to try. I'll report back to this thread on Monday with my findings.
