What do you charge with?
« on: Feb 14, 2023, 05:46 PM »
Hello everyone, what do you charge your 12 volt flasher/fish finder battery with?. The last charger I got from amazon overheated to the point you couldnt touch it.

Switched over to the Marcum lithium and it came with a charger, so that is what I use. I don’t rely on knockoff chargers.

X2 on the Noco charger.  Their Genius series in low amperage work great in keeping a 12V SLA ready to go:

It is not unusual for a charger and/or battery to heat up when charging. My laptop charger gets very warm. What kind of battery do you have? Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) or some sort of Lithium (Li)? It is best to use a charger that is made for the specific type of battery, especially lithium (Amped Outdoors, Dakota, etc.).

These chargers normally get warm.  The standard issue charger my Garmin came with got a bit warm, but I noticed it more so when I upgraded to a Dakota Lithium.  I sent them an email asking about it and they said it was normal, even with my temps reading about 109 with a heat gun.

Standard 12v chargers are everywhere and are probably like everything else.  You might have better luck going with a well known company.

Looks like they belong together. Too bad you jumped. Amped Outdoors has a blowout sale going on their 12AH battery and 3A charger combo right now ($60 shipped!)

The main thing is to make sure it was designed for your battery, not the electronics that it powers. If you replaced your SLA battery with a 20V tool battery or a lithium 12V, the charging profile and voltage are different, so you need a new charger matched to the battery. I got a 12V trolling motor battery (LiFePO4), and even though the company said I could use a standard 12V charger, it never charged fully until I bought a new charger made for that battery technology.

It could be a defective battery or defective charger. Check voltage on battery. Sometimes if battery level gets too low it went charge. There is usually some circuitry built into LifPo batteries to protect battery from overcharging, short circuit and a low level cut off. Next I would check output on charger. Voltage and amperage level to make sure they match info stamped or labeled on charger itself. There is also a recommended amperage and voltage levels for battery. Check battery specs for that info.If you bought battery and/ or charger on Amazon, then try to return one or both. Dakota and Amped are proven technology and 1st hand tested by many anglers now. Can't go wrong there. Good luck!

Very common for lithium chargers to get almost too hot to touch. That said, I’m not sure that knock off battery has a bms in it to regulate the voltage.
