« on: Feb 09, 2023, 06:50 AM »
Was destined for Jury Duty yesterday which got canceled due to icy roads.  So I made the best of it and went north.

Hey Jim.  I saw a couple on livescope and some smelt.  Caught some perch.  It felt like summer.  Even that far north the picture of the new smooth ice, that 5" was roting fast.
The anchor ice varied from 10" to a couple feet.  Behind the anchor ice was 8-10 of white/black. Couldnt make it to prime reefs as there was no ice to stand on.  I am up in indian lake this weekend, going as hard as I can for 48 hours on lakers and crappie.

lowaccord66: Did you actually go out that chopped up ice shale or just the smooth stuff?

Its a bay so where I got on was smooth, for a while.  As you get closer to where the bay widens the anchor ice starts. (its technically only anchor ice where the slabs grab bottom) Then past it was the smooth stuff again, less snow and not even half as thick.  Sometimes its thick and safe to cross, othertimes it can be super dangerous.  This time it was 12"-bottoming out the auger where its really stacked. It sucks to pull the flipover through it.  Especially when there is nothing happening on the other side.

This is what it looks like towards the end of the season.

Yeah, working is always a tough day but that’s what pays for fishing. Fishing those areas have been good lately and I’m sure you will find them.

Best of 9 from yesterday.  Time to switch lakes and look for larger ones.

Yesterday was slower.  Only 3 for the morning but at least one was decent.

Thanks Mike, I was going to come up that way but a free cabin in prime NY laker territory was too good to pass up.

Thanks icedog.  Good company and a decent bite for this late in the season.  I usually get on this lake April fools day.  Doubt it this year.

That’s what it’s all about and enjoy the moment when the opportunity comes knocking. We’ll be searching for safe ice again up north somewhere soon. Never know, we might have one of those March’s like in the past a few years ago and get to April

I go to block all the time.  We can make something happen, spring time is ok for them, july is best.
