Garmin echomap UHD 73cv power up time?
« on: Jan 12, 2023, 10:18 PM »
Getting ready to pick one up, for hole hopping for example does it power up pretty quickly? Have a helix 5 that takes a bit of time. Any insights on the garmin ? Thank you

I just got a 93 and I assume it would be about the same as the 73.  My buddy has an older hum and it def takes longer than my Garmin.  Could be a number of factors (age, memory, cpu processor, etc) but I wouldn't consider either a hinderance.  Turn the unit on sooner or leave it on is my suggestion if that is a concern for you.  Lithium battery a must in my opinion for weight and battery life. Hope it was helpful in some way.

I turn mine on in the morning and it stays on until I'm done for the day.  Only time I'd ever turn it off is if I have a long move or something.  I went with a lithium battery, so I don't worry about it too much.  Have fished for 12 hours and have never run out of battery.

Any issue with damage to transducers if you run them out of the water?

You can put the unit to sleep while moving. I guess it takes about 30 seconds to power up. I don't think you want to leave it running out of the water.

You just need to go into your settings and turn the transducer off.  It will stop transmitting and that prevents the possibility of it overheating.

Is there really a legitimate danger of the transducer overheating with the ambient temperatures encountered while ice fishing?

I never turn my unit off while fishing. 50% of the time I even forget to turn it off when I pack-up for the day, and only turn off when I get home to recharge the battery. Been doing this for years with chirp, panoptix, and livescope transducers.

Valid question. I just decided to err on the side of caution since I just bought livescope and didn’t want an awkward warranty refusal.

It takes a couple minutes to power up. If you're hole hopping, I wouldn't turn it off in between holes. It has a sleep mode that I think turns the transducer transmit off if you want to hole hop. If you put it in the sleep mode, it comes back much faster than it does if you did a full power off. The sleep mode would work well for hole hopping. If you're concerned about the battery life, I've had the stock battery on at 50% backlight all day with plenty of charge to spare.

Been using sleep mode.. hoping everything is sleeping when I use it. 106sv comes out of sleep mode as fast as you can press the buttons…

there is a noticeable lag. Im guessing about 1/4 of a second (not a lot but noticeable) Apparently it is normal and took me a few minutes to get used to it. People say there are adjustments you can make to mitigate it but I dont think you can make it go away 100%.

Watched one video yesterday saying that turning ghost reject and noise reject "off" might give faster feedback.  Have not confirmed either way.  Just sharing some info I heard from a YT Livescope fellow.

I just started using my echomap uhd 73sv recently for ice fishing (non livescope) it take ls a minute to start up. I just put it to sleep in between spots.

Lot of settings to go through and way different than my flasher. Right now I prefer my flasher, but I'll keep spending time with the Garmin and getting more comfortable with it, hopefully.  I do think in some situations the traditional vexilars and marcums will always be superior.

Make sure your A-scope is turned on and your scroll speed set to fastest.  I don't really notice any real lag on mine.

Also make sure to update the firmware. For that, you'll need a microSD card. That's also necessary for the auto-charting feature, if you want to use that.

It needs one if you want to update the firmware. If you just want to update the included charts, I don't think you need one, but I could be wrong about that.

How is the sonar performance compared to a helix?
