Title: ice fishing season is over
Post by: Robbie L on Feb 10, 2023, 10:54 AM
I guess it depends on where you are in the state, but at least in Northeast PA,
it seems as if the season is over. I just looked at the 15 day forecast, and the
temperatures will be warming up. Rob

Maybe for YOU, but NOT me! 😜

In fact my buddy texted me from a lake in Wayne Co. this morning..........he is fishing on 8” of ice.

Gonna get down into the mid 20’s the next 2 nights. Warm up next week but cold again for next weekend. I plan to fish all weekend and again the following. Then Accuweather is predicting a prolonged cold snap the end of the month into the first week of March.

But I don’t give up easy! 😁 I can remember a couple years in the not so distant past that we had a warmup in Feb. and everybody put their stuff away. We got a cold snap in March and I was back on the ice for a week or 2 on 5-6” of ice when everybody else had packed it in. I’m betting we have at least 3-4 more weeks in NEPA! 🤞

Of course you gotta be smart and pick the right lakes and SPUD,SPUD,SPUD..................😉

As Robbie said, depends on where you're at, although it looks like Robbie is in the one corner of the state where there has been some fishable ice.  If you have some decent ice, may hold onto it until the predicted cold snap comes (late February, early March), but where I'm at, looking at open water or junk ice now, a frigid spell under the late winter sun isn't going to bring back what we don't have. Southwest PA it is over after barely getting started a couple of times.  Did some fly fishing the other day and planning on more of that over the next month.  Hoping to get the kayak out early this year, but one of the bummers of these warm winters is that they almost always seem to be followed a cold wet spring.  Gotta take advantage of whatever opportunity nature provides, though, but around these parts it won't involve being out on the ice.

Yes, I saw in the reports where there is some fishable ice. My two main lakes, Wallenpaupack
and Lackawanna state park did not produce, but I guess I have to look more at the reports.

I'm in NW PA and haven't even had a chance to get out. When there is ice, I'm working, when I'm not working there isn't ice. Been a rough year for sure. May have to look into reserving a week of vacation to head into Canada for some better ice next year!

I got one day of ice fishing in this season, that was last Sunday.  Fished a pond that had 3" of ice on it and caught 4 perch.  This winter was pathetic.  Unless you're in the NE part of the state stick a fork in this season.

Even if the ice is safe, I hate wading through slush. There's good open water appearing everywhere and you can find fish from the bank. If we do get a cold snap later, I have the equipment ready. But I think we've seen the last of decent ice here in PA for this season.
Title: Re: ice fishing season is over
Post by: Spider1 on Feb 12, 2023, 06:39 AM
I only got out a few times this year, but that's on me. I could have been out more if I wanted but had to do other stuff. If I had the time I could have gotten out a lot more and still can, but yes most of the ice is further north. If I was dying to get out fishing and there wasn't any ice I would have the kayak out and gear myself for winter kayak fishing... or take a day trip or over nighter to the coast for some beach angling. Ice Hound drives 2 hours plus every week to get up here to get on the ice and Rutt Nutt makes a long trip every week or so just so he can fish them catfood trout! ;D Hey Rutt, how long does that drive take? But me, If I ain't fishing I'm at the range, or flinging arrows. Heck this week I'm helping my grandson make a set of cedar arrows when I could be walking on water.

I guess the thing I'm saying is, if you can't find a place nearby to walk on water, maybe you will have to make a longer trip to do it, or just figure out something else to do. But just so ya know, it's only February. There's still ice if you know where to look for it and plan the drive in advance.

I’m sitting on 7” of hard ice in Wayne County. It was 25* at the house when I left at 5:30 and 21* when I got here around 6:30. Fishing is slow but I got out and ice is great! 😎

Spider- my 2 favorite trout lakes are a 65-70 min drive. Toby Harlem is a little closer (50 min) but I usually only fish that first outing of the year.

P.S. was 39* when I left at 12:30. Ice was still hard on top with no slop, slush or puddles! 😎

I'm happy for you guys that have safe ice now ,But here in SW Pa and NW  Pa it sure looks like its over! Ten day forecast all days in 50's and 60 's nite only a couple  below freezing ,most lakes here are compleatly open water.  It would take an epic cold polar vortex that would last quite awhilwe for our lakes to freeze over. Enjoy your ice if ya have it !!!

Yes, I am very thankful to live in NEPA,  where even in bad years we usually have safe ice within an hour’s drive! 👍🤞🙏

We were on 8" today in Wayne County. Same conditions. 18* at the lake. Couldnt kick open the holes that were drilled yesterday. The shore did have some sketchy looking spots comng off at noon but we had no problem.

I’m not trying to get anyone to fish. And not trying to be a “hero!” 🙄

I’m just an eternal optimist...........LOV E my icefishing and don’t give up when others do. 😁

I’ve been doing this a long time, know how to read the ice, have all the safety gear (including float suit) and USE it!

I hiked into a lake on Saturday that I knew was marginal at best but had all my gear in a backpack and carried my spud bar to give it a go. Couldn’t get on the ice at first spot so I hiked around the lake checking different spots. Saw some holes that were fresh(either that morning or the day before), but just couldn’t get to them. Shoreline was shot everywhere I checked. So I chalked it up to a scouting mission and hiked back out. I’m no fool.

So you do you and I’ll do me. And oh by the way................... ..I don’t think you know me well enough to take  liberties with my handle! 😉

Hey CarpBoy,
When I see clouds like that in winter (cold winter), I imagine they come from some open body of water where evaporation is happening. Something like a stream/creak, or also some industrial evaporation. Could even be a warm section of forest that is creating water vapor. A place where moist hot air is being released and small puffs of clouds are forming. When I see them the sun normally burns them off a couple of hours later or the wind pulls them apart. Could totally be off track, interested to hear others opinions.
I wish I saw clouds like that over a frozen lake this year  :'( maybe we will have ice fishing for march!
Best,
Jake

PA is caught in that netherland of not quite the north, and not quite the south. That is probably why the biggest battle of the Civil War happened in Gettysburg..........    ??? :-X

I lived the first 31 years of my life in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and never missed out on starting ice fishing before January 1, and could reliably fish somewhere close until at least mid March every year. Now that I live 2 hours south of Albany, it makes a huge difference. There is not much worth ice fishing around here anyway, but regardless there is not safe ice on even small waters in southeastern NY in most years. I drive 4 hours north to do 98% of my ice fishing overall, all of it in years such as this one.

I feel for you guys in PA for not having reliable ice. I live fairly close to the border myself, but only because I still need this job for another say 3 years. After that and I am moving to northern NY again. The bait shops and motels in northern NY are happy to take your money if you really do need to go ice fishing and can't because you live in PA

The giant extra safe and cautious paint scoop hahaha 4” of honey combed garbage he plays all big and tough but I’d love to see him pm you and help you get onto the ice if he’s sucha good dude and just wants ppl fishing, another case of little man syndrome we got here Pete lots of snow coming be cautious

What is your problem?! You talk real tough hiding behind a computer!  ::)
So I sent you a PM so we can talk about this in person................ ..... let’s see if your attitude changes when we meet face to face!  🤨

P.S. that is a gaff I marked to measure the ice and it works great. 😁 And there was NO honey combing of ice when it is in the teens for several nights in a row.................bu t you would have known that if you were actually standing on it!  ;)

I tried REAL hard to take the high toad here!  ::) I’m usually a pretty nice and easy going kinda guy.................bu t when you start insulting me and pushing my buttons you will definitely see a different side of me!   ;)

If anybody is wondering why I didn’t post a report, it was because although there was 4” of solid ice, the first 2 feet of shoreline was very sketchy and I had to find a safe spot to get on. No problem once I got on, but had to be careful picking the right spot. I got off the ice before the temps got up into the 40’s and the shoreline deteriorated anymore. Pretty sure it would have been very difficult if not impossible to get on the ice today. And they’re calling for heavy snow tonight in Eastern Pike and Wayne Counties so that’s gonna mess things up for the next several days.................. ....

Never claimed to “be the man” and not “beating my chest!”  Just love ice-fishing and therefore I get on it whenever I can................

Like I said before- YOU DO YOU and I’LL DO ME!

P.S. You should see the private messages and texts I got about you!  ;) ;D

Hey Rutt.  Don't waste your time with whomever HWH is.  He decided to target you with insults for no reason at all.  I have fished with you many times and can say without equivocation you are a true gentleman and willing to provide everyone on IS updated information on conditions and results.  You even take the time to drive to a lake for the sole purpose of providing ice reports to others, many of whom you don't know or never met.  So I don't know what that guy's angle is but he certainly is not a sportsman and not worth the time of day.  Let's enjoy our trips with our friends and let him do whatever it is he does on all the private lakes he fishes.
