Title: Chaumont Bay trips
Post by: ChaumontMasters on Jan 15, 2020, 08:26 AM
Hey guys my name is Louis, I just sponsored our PA page. Im from the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area, West Pittston to be exact. Anyway I Just opened a 12 room lodge in Chaumont Bay on Lake Ontario. Its a powerhouse trophy fishery, especially in the winter months when the Walleye and Perch fill up the bay. We offer Guiding, Lodging and rentals for lodge guest including Livescope, snowmobiles and just about everything else. Get in touch with me thru shanty and I'll happily give you guys 10% off. Also guys from the Scranton Wilkes barre are car pool up 81 every weekend so if your interested let me know or check out website with the link above or our Facebook page. Thanks!

What are the ice conditions up that way? 8 hours is a haul for me but if we don't have any ice then it could be worth a trip.

Thank you very much for sponsoring this great site Louis.  I think I can speak for many on this board and this site by saying how much I appreciate you and the other sponsors that make it possible for us to share our love of ice fishing with each other - even when we can't be on the ice.  I wish you much success with your new business venture.

Outside of a weekend I spent in Maine a few years ago, I have never made a big ice fishing trip but it's something I really want to do at some point and this seems pretty reasonable.  About how long of a drive is Chaumont Bay from Scranton?  When you have a moment, please let me know.

Thanks!

Thanks Nuangolasusquehanna (wow!  that is a mouthful...) I'm about 2 hours South of Scranton so that's not too bad for a long weekend trip.

Butcher, Its my pleasure to sponsor this forum, and yes I wanted to keep it reasonably priced for everyone to be able to enjoy what our amazing fishery has to offer. Not to mention I love being out there myself. I make it up from the Pittston area in 3 hours and 30 mins. It's directly up 81 to Watertown. Also my lodge is lakeside right in the bay, if you would like you can check out more by clicking the sponsor link ChaumontMasters.com or on FB at Chaumont Masters
Thank you!

JiggerMan, Thats per person a night, everyone will have a private room with a twin or double bed. And yes there is a huge living space and kitchen. The Lodge is lakeside and yes for machines as long as the ice in shape for it. Thanks

Hey Mike! Good to hear from you..  We have some ice forming in some of the siacked areas but hopefully we can get a little lucky and have ourselves something to fish on around New Years. I guess we'll see. Shouldn't be much longer before we can be on some inland spots tho. Maybe we can get a good report out of Ron and do a Lake John trip over Christmas.. Talk soon

Hey Louis. Hope you are well Sir! Looking forward to the trip. Doing some waaaay too early planning and gear inspection. What line would you recommend for walleye there? Thinking 10# flouro leader but unsure about main line.

Never too early my friend! Lol... I use 10lb Suffix 832 braided line to a 10-12lb Fluoro leader, sized so the leader ends before getting spooled when I hang the hook on the hook keeper. I also really like the Ultra 8 Carrier Superline by Berkley in 10lb as well.
See ya soon!

We fished with Louis 2 years ago for mainly perch.  We had 6 people that went to stay with him and all I can say is it was absolutely phenomenal.  Louis was very knowledgeable with fishing that area and was very friendly and accommodating to everyone.   We caught so many perch it was crazy.  In the 2 days of fishing, we caught over 1000 perch.  Size ranged from 4 inches to 13.5 inches.  Was a blast when they came into the hole, would hook up as soon as would get down the hole.  We are looking at another trip later in the season again, but several of us work in health care so not sure if can get off work.  It was definitely nice to have the snow machine cause was a decent drag with the snow on ice and also with the cold temps.  Can't go wrong with his guiding service.  Nez

Just got home from fishing Chaumont with Louis the past 3 days. Top notch. Highly recommend it if you want to catch a trophy walleye.

I lost a SLOB the first day. Rest of the trip had them pretty sluggish due to the artic blast but guys were still picking trophy eyes. The 13# fish caught on Friday was within a stones throw of our shanty. Today we pulled to new grounds with another group from the lodge and the other group got a 27” beauty. Had to tuck tail and run home to beat the snow.

Louis knows his stuff. Super knowledgeable and helpful for anglers of all experience levels. Genuinely loves to fish and put people on fish. It shows.

Also met so many great people and die hard anglers at the lodge. Gotta be dedicated to fish -12!  ;D

Pulled hook on the shiver minnow first day was a heartbreaker, but had it on for a good minute and it was doing whatever it wanted. Guaranteed slob. Amazing fight. I will be back to get it!!!

Thanks Lou! Keep up the great work Sir! Looking forward to the next one.

Made my last ice trip of the year to the same place as my first. Bomb cyclone be damned. Stayed with Lou and fished all day Sat and Sun am with a buddy. We lucked out on the cyclone but moving around in the wind was not too fun on Saturday. Started out by Herrick and my buddy set on a big creature first thing but the hook slipped. Ice out there was starting to rot from the bottom. From there it was pretty tough. Moved in shallower but just perch here and there. Started closer to duck bay on sun am and had some walleye cruising but wouldn’t commit. Better perch action with some nice ones coming up to say hello. Even got a bonus pickerel that gave a spirited fight. Moved to the other side of a hump and played with some rovers for a bit. Assumed they were perch. Just as a snow squall started creeping in I was marking with looked like 2 perch until it wasn’t…. Hookset determined it was an elusive golden eyewall. 25.5” and a new pb. Perfect placeholder until next year! Will be back and ready to conquer a giant. Thanks Lou, keep up the good work buddy!

No arguments there from me. Strictly head boat reports and chaumont page for me. Just informing you guys. Louis works hard with drone footage over time which can be invaluable safety and access info  about ice formation and potential hazards. Worth a look.

Like someone mentioned Rutt, you can check out a commercial Facebook site without having to be a member.  A lot of businesses forgo a website and simply advertise on Facebook.  I have never signed up and never will, but I do check out a lot of commercial sites.

I know George, but I just won’t do it out of “Principle!” (I’m stubborn that way! 🤨)

Hey fellas,

Just got back from staying with Louis at Chaumont. Fished 3-1/2 days (wed-sat). Took the sled but the ice access wasn’t good for launching so we walked it. Not too bad on glare ice (bring cleats). Ice was pretty patchy looking but only found a few soft spots even though we had mostly mild temps and some rain. Bring the spud!!! Had opportunities to cash in on multiple species, lost a small pike at the hole and my buddy dumped a giant pike that got hooked on the ice. He ended up with a 31” laker instead.  Next day we both hooked a walleye but they shook hooks on us. Friday was dead. Sat we rose a few walleye but they wouldn't commit. I ended up with my own 31” laker and we called it a trip. Had a few whitefish and perch as well but we are typically not trying to catch those here. This is a trophy fishery and its all about getting one world class fish. It can be disappointing if you dont have that mindset, which is why i state that here for newbies to Chaumont. You can catch plenty of perch with small lures but the biggest walleye we hooked was following a perch school, so keep that in mind. Opportunity cost is real and perch are plentiful in tons of locations that dont have monster fish.  Main tackle takeaways are bring a stout rod equipped with at least 15# braid/10# fluoro leader, if you use swivels dont run a long leader (ask me how i know), reel down and set HARD after bite, and get the fish to the hole ASAP. If you are new to the fishery i would strongly encourage a guided trip to learn the ins and outs, and potential hazards. Louis and his guys are top notch and will give you everything you need to know to land a trophy. Thanks for everything Louis, looking forward to the next one buddy!
