Hey all,
Moved recently and now have the opportunity to catch more trout through the ice. I've done a lot of reading on Lake trout. But I can't find much for catching brookies through the ice. Any tips? Bait/lure /depth. I jig and use tipups

Among the best I've found is the PK Lures Flutter Fish in Firetiger Glow.
The three smallest sizes have been killer. ;)2
A fair warning ~ Don't clutter it with bait.

Just about the only trout I catch through the ice are brookies. For me the rattle spoons and flutter spoons have worked really well. I prefer to add a waxie or spike or two on the hook to get them to bite the right end of the lure, as they tend to slash and bite at the spoon bodie. If you miss the hook set get it right back down there as they tend to circle back and hit it a few times. Target shallow water, usually 5' and under, preferably near a drop off or deeper hole. They will also swim around structure and schools tend to circle and a area like a cove or point vs circling the whole lake/pond non stop. Depending on the location (and stocking density) If you find a hole that you can sight fish and see a few come up to your offering, you can sometimes stay at that one hole/area and get a flurry of action every 15 mins or so. For bait on traps, use small shiners, a piece of a night crawler (or better yet a euro night crawler as they handle the cold and are smaller), shrimp or salmon egg.

Shallow water is a definite , I live up in the Berkshire and I hit all Browns and Brookies in shallow water tight to shore especially near rocks. The trout up here predominantly feed on crayfish and small minnows hiding In the rThe rocks. A trick I use while jigging would be to to literally make the lure go crazy just above the bottom followed by immediately letting it "die" resting on the bottom. Mind you were I do this is a sandy rocky bottom, no weeds. Typically the trout hit it while it's motionless on the bottom. Again this is what works up here just my two cents

Great stuff guys! Appreciate it

Have had good action for brookies on black crappie jig tipped with mealworm.
Caught this one dead sticking a night crawler and piece of corn:

Its stomach was full of sculpins.
Depth varies.

They like to hang around near shore in winter. Try around a fallen tree or beaver house.

That fish looks like it came from henrys lake

brook trout are pretty much off limits in ny----better read the regs----and stick to lakers browns rainbows

all trout ponds are off limits completely---and the big lakes open to ice fishing have very very few brook trout
