looking for some tips in catching large mouth bass like water depth and distance out.
Hi my son and i was fishing pleasant pond years ago ,we set out traps out from the shore at the state park, a couple guys with their kids set up about 20 ft from our traps in deeper water ,they had flag after flag 3lb to 5 pound range .i then looked at my son and said see what 20 more feet from our traps was the differece.

When I fish for them, I go a couple feet off bottom and use lg shiners or 6 inch suckers... I've caught them in 3ft- 50fow :-\
-
You see them alot in the deeper waters this time of year as ponds have turned over.
-
find the deepest water in a small pond and use the biggest baits.
-
16 reels off bottom!!
-
but the pond is only fifteen reels deep :P

dont you know thats why they have floating line?? :P

I find them in the 5-20 FOW range. Bigger shiners the better. I like to be about 2 feet off the bottom, but have found them pretty much anywhere.

When you do catch them, throw 'em back!
-
right off the bottom deep water with a med shiner
-
pretty much what everyone else has already said. Deep water, med-med heavy shiners close to the bottom. You'll get 'em!
-
small suckers seem to keep the perch at bay.

The largemouth are pretty much what I target through the ice now as there are several ponds in my area that have 3-6lb bass and lots of them. I've had my best luck in 10-20ft of water fishing a large shiner 2 feet off bottom. Find a nice point wherer the water drops off rather quickly and try to stay in that water depth. Good luck

i fish in 5 ft of water and set my bait half way and i chase flags all day (rock piles) good luck tight lines
-
I've caught my personal best small mouth (5lbs) with the bait on the bottom in 10 fow and a small shiner. Flag went up on the last trap when I was getting ready to pull out the first in the afternoon.
-
shouldn't be to hard to find em if there is a decent population of em in the lake.
put your bait closer to bottom, find some deeper structure for the bigger fish.
-
Bass will eat just about everything and at most depths greater than two ft
-
my pb 6lb largemouth came in 17 fow with two small shiners one one size 6 hook on the bottom
-
I have beter luck useing singel hooks insted of trebel hooks.
-
i've found that in lakes where bass feed on small yellow perch, a gold spoon or jigging rapala works best. tip it with a perch eye and that should get you some. no clue how to locate them other than "find the bait fish". bass usually hang around where they can ambush prey consistently, so the same weedbeds that hold bluegill and perch would be the places to look.

My best thru the ice 9.3lb LM came out of 4 ft of water, on the outside edge of a weed line, w/ med. heavy shiner. One of the keys to hooking and landing this fish was a quick strike rig...
-
I go 1 foot under in 5 feet of water
-
i like to fish flats or breaks...i prefer water in the 10 to 20 foot range...i use big shiners or suckers...
