I was just a little kid, at home with my Dad. I remember the news cutting in on whatever we were watching on TV at the time. It was miserably cold that day, because we had brought in firewood from the woodshed shortly beforehand. I do remember that vividly for some reason.

I was a lead engineer in the SSME combustion devices stress group.  I was at work listening to the NASA live feed.  SSME = Space Shuttle Main Engine (now RS-25 engine)

I'll never forget it. They had built up the hype  for weeks around Christa McAuliffe who was a local school teacher. We saw her face on TV practically every night. It was like knowing her personally.

I was working at a local newspaper and it was the only time they ever literally yelled "stop the presses!". They printed a new front page with the story and sent it out with the old front page as page 2.

The worst part is they were covering her folks during the broadcast so we got to watch them watch their kid blow up.

Christa's class was also watching when their teacher was killed. I was in a government building installing data circuits when my partner who was working in an office with a TV told me about it through my headset. I told him he was full of it and then went to where he was and watched it on TV for a while.

My Sr year too, how about that.   We had no school as our HS hosted a huge music contest and school from all over the area come and use up all the rooms.   We did have wrestling practice that morning.  I came home and caught it live on TV.

I was a very young MP in the Army and was just walking into the Garrison when I saw it on the office TV.  Total shock and a sad day.  That was a long time ago but I haven't changed a bit - lol.

In prison, 35 at the time and playing Sgt. Klink. I didn't see it until the convicts went wild in the rec rooms and it showed on replay. All my COs went running thinking there was a disturbance of some kind and all we could really see was a strange arc of where the rocket blew up and was disintegrating. Very sad day for sure.

28 years old and at work.  When the other shuttle burned up on re-entry in 2003 I was 45 and ice fishing on Lake Erie at the time. One of the other groups had a radio and heard about it and word spread all around in no time.
It's stupendous!  It's colossal!  It's putrid!!

Was substituting a high school class in the library when we heard the news.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

I was standing in front of an 8th grade sci/math class in an old school computer lab.  No internet. Another teacher in the prep area between the two computer labs was watching on TV. He motioned me over - obviously upset. I went over to the threshhold between the two rooms.  One glance was all I needed to see.  I then gazed out over my 30 or so kids, all enthusiasticallyengage d with their "Hi-Tech" Apple 2Es.  I realized that the next words I said would touch those kids forever.  Never will I forget that day.

I was in 6th grade. We had 2 teachers. 1 was ok but the other was an overdramatic dork. Before the flight, he says that if 1 thing goes wrong, the whole aircraft might blow up. When it blew up, a classmate said "looks like 1 thing went wrong". I go, "hell, maybe 2 or 3". We got sent to the office. The secretary busted up laughing when we told her what we said. Me and Eric had to go help the janitor clean  the entryway.

Eric died at age 21 when he got drunk, wrecked his car and drowned in a foot of water.  :'( great guy.
