Making Ice

I live in Northern Illinois and we have had a crazy winter.  Two weeks ago it was in the 40s and 50s and now we have had below zero and weather in the teens the last couple.  From completely open water, does anyone know how much ice is created at what temperatures, or once there is ice how fast do the lakes/ponds make ice???
