We usually use 6lb or 4lb . I like 6lb myself gives you a little insurance on bigger fish.
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

I use either 6 or 8.  I like using 8 just in case I get a big one.  A big one meaning....5-7 pounds.  They say that you should double the weight of the fish you plan to catch for your line test.  I usually catch 3-4 pounds so either 6 or 8lb line is perfect.

I use mono FYI.

when using MONO i prefer 4 to 6 lb mainly 4 lb!!
I switched over to FIRELINE last year and i won't fish with anything else now it's the best for whities.
i normally have a hard time to land the big big fish on 4lb mono but with the fireline there's no stretch so u can really get a good grip on them!!

I like the stretch in the line, especially if I have to play them a bit.  I will use Fireline if I plan to bomb them up as soon as the hook is in their mouth.

i guess it's just a matter of preference we fish them much differently then most people. We don't jig for them, our lake is murky and they seem to be timid plus u can't keep the smelt off long enough.  I have tried jigging for hours and go back to old method wouldn't be down there 5 mins i'd have one.  we fish still bait on bottoms
pikerel eggs, small piece of sucker is what i have most of my luck on.  I use size 10 to 14 hooks we let them inhale the bait down into the belly and catch em that way. Seems to work around here.  Although i did win 2nd prize in a tournament of one i caught 4 feet off bottom on a smelt lure.  First one i ever caught that way!!

Braids work great for jigging Whities, you get way better feel.  As for test, it depends on how big the fish are an if you are going to get incidentals(like Lakers) I usually use 10 or 15lb fireline...

I have caught Whities on 30lb Spiderwire all the way down to 10lb Fireline and I fish right next to guys using mono or floro and catch just as many.  I also have used it during the summer and during the fall/winter in the river when they come up to spawn.

They bite so lightly that I think you don't even feel half the 'takes' when the Hoover your bait on Mono, and you definately feel it on Braids and can set the hook!  They are fun fish to catch any time of year!

Good Fishing
