Minnow head on horizontal jig
« on: Dec 28, 2018, 02:39 PM »
Newbie here!  2nd year ice fishing and finally got my own gear! Question on baiting the jig...

Do I use two minnow heads for a horizontal jig (one on each hook or do you only use one minnow head and put it towards the front of the lure?

I usually put one head on the front hook, or wax worms, etc.

Usually front.  When you have one on the tail, it usually kills the lure action.  Depending on actual lure and chunk of tipped.  Some it's better on tail.

I would agree, depends on the lure

Always put the minnow head on the front hook but barb that faces back towards the bait or belly..

What species are you using that lure to jig for? If pike or walleye it won't matter what hooks you choose to bait.  Fish usually have to be in a pretty aggressive feeding mood to a hit a lure like that or a chubby darter or lindy darter and often no bait is needed at all then. If the bite is slow I would use a standard jig with a full minnow.
