K, I'll have to give that a try. Is the ice pretty safe in that area? What time is a good time to go out for either the herring and coho or perch? Also what are you using for lure/bait? Waxies and med fats? Sorry about all the questions, but thanks for the info.

One more question. Any point in throwing down a couple tip ups, there anything around there that will hit it? Thanks.
What's safe?  You should be answering that one on your own.  Regarding the others, standard perch baits work.  Putting out tip-ups is always worth it, even if they don't catch fish.  Figure medium sized minnows or smelt for salmon anywhere from just under the ice to '10 down.  Sight fish for the herring with Pimps.  Watch for the gill flair, don't wait for the thump.  Learning this stuff is mostly about getting out and doing it.

It's usually just a here and there thing with the herring when i go out if i get a nice school come through and see them in time to get em' you could get your limit if  your fast enough and they are willing to hit and stick around for a second or two. I think they average about 12-14

People do spear herring in the bay. Early morning seems best, but I have had them come through in the middle of the day also. Remember catching some that were close to 20 in. Must have counted 30+ tents out on the bay today. People were as far north as the lighthouse, no one off squaw beach yet.

If you suspect people are spearing, don't go any where near them. They will spook the fish and you won't hook any.

The new ice that was forming around the Mission is just slush now.  The new stuff at Squaw beach just North of the lighthouse is still there and may be fishable soon.  From the lighthouse South is fine.

No shanties at the beach yet.  The ice took a bit of a beating North of the lighthouse this week but is still there, about up to the tire shop.  I'm going to wait a couple days before trying it.  We fished East of the lighthouse today in 140' on 3-4" of ice.  Started early a.m. in 75' fishing for herring and jigging the bottom for lakers.  Caught a couple of each then went deeper and bobbed for lake trout.  About a dozen small ones this afternoon, a couple 3# biggest.  The ice we fished last week is about 7-8" now.  Quite a few fishermen this morning all around the bay.  Nice day again tomorrow so get out while you can.

Whitefish hole and points South are fine. Machines and 4-wheelers on the ice.   Near the lighthouse had about 60 tents lined up this morning, all walkers. The area a little North is rough but seems to be glued back together enough for a couple guys to be wandering around on and to the North.  Not me.  Next week if it's still there I'll try.

It was good ice there Friday but the Weather Channel is calling for North winds again for a day or two so that could change overnight.
