Drove by head the of bay while working today some tents and people out few 100 yds.  Im sure ice is ok there but looks sketchy to me lots of water pooling on top with warm weather. Ice not quite to baraga marina yet we need sub zero soon or not much fishing for K bay.

Did anyone get caught on the ice floe? Or was it just shanties that were lost? Warm temps + south wind + little ice cover = lost shanties, lost gear, and maybe lost lives.

Yah i heard that VHS made its way to Superior , read the news "Deadly VHS Virus Found In Lake Superior"

This is so bad, massive kills of fish expected, they say it doesn't affect humans, i wont eat those fish though, what are your thoughts guys.

Title: Re: Keweenaw Bay Ice
Post by: acrawfor on Feb 01, 2010, 09:03 PM
Cook them properly and it shouldn't be a problem. From my understanding of viruses, heat distorts proteins in their dna and doesn't allow it to properly infect a cell and reproduce. So it shouldn't be able to infect you if its cooked thouroughly. College teached me good  ;)

By no means an expert, but thats my understanding.

(From WDNR: http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/vhs/vhs_qafishandhumanhealth.html) Is VHS a health risk to people?

No, VHS is not a health risk for people so anglers can continue to enjoy fishing and eating their catch. VHS has never been associated with human illness since first being discovered in European fish decades ago (DHFS, May 2007). Fish can be infected by VHS, but may not show signs of disease. Such fish are safe to eat so long as the fish is properly cooked. However, you should not eat fish you find dead, decomposing, or that appear sick, regardless of cause. Decomposing fish may attract other bacteria harmful to people.

While it is generally safe to handle fish, you should always wash your hands after handling fish especially if the fish is dead or appears diseased. Dead fish and fish with sores may be contaminated with bacteria and it is a good idea to wear protective gloves when handling dead fish.

definetly not safe in my opinion only 3" i guess. but there are some daredevils out there 7 tents off the head of the bay and 7-8 off the baraga marina

I heard from someone that lives on the bay that a large chuck broke off and crumbled on the eastern shore and the rest of it has been pressure cracking at the shore. Be safe guys. It's not worth drifting to Canada.

Made a trip up tonight with my dad. Walked out from the pump house about 1/2 mi. and fished in 90'. Had a half dozen hits between the two of us but nothing on the ice. There was 4-5" of black ice after we got by the frozen floe near shore. Never hard water fished for lakers before but still had a good time trying something new. Hope to make it out again soon.

Me and Chase are working on getting out there, we are just putting in a little more research this year. Last year I went out 9 times for a total of one 15.5 inch laker.   :-\ Chase was the winner with two of about the same size. We're thinking this year we will be able to get more time in on squaw beach in our shanty. Last year our only attempt at that was on the  -15 day in a tent.

The ice inside of the bay is fine.  Had 5" at the head of the bay this morning and 5" just South of the Sand point lighthouse this afternoon.  Nice hard, clear ice with just enough snow on top to walk on without sliding.  There is new ice North and East from the lighthouse that we didn't try.  Maybe in a few more days if the wind stays down.  Caught a couple coho and a few perch.  Didn't see any herring but other fishermen at the head of the bay saw a couple school that wouldn't bite.

Thinking about heading down there for the first time tomorrow or friday. Not very familiar with the area so where is a good area to head out from that will be definately on safe ice? Also any tips on how deep to fish and what to use? Thanks.

Head of the bay off the willow tree used to be a good spot but from what i've heard so far this year it stinks. Your best bet would propably be to go off the Disney Marina (Baraga Marina) over by the BP gas station i would fish bottom for perch or up top about 10' down for herring and salmon atleast that's where i catch em'
Title: Re: Keweenaw Bay Ice
Post by: acrawfor on Feb 03, 2010, 10:09 PM
K, I'll have to give that a try. Is the ice pretty safe in that area? What time is a good time to go out for either the herring and coho or perch? Also what are you using for lure/bait? Waxies and med fats? Sorry about all the questions, but thanks for the info.

One more question. Any point in throwing down a couple tip ups, there anything around there that will hit it? Thanks.

What's safe?  You should be answering that one on your own.  Regarding the others, standard perch baits work.  Putting out tip-ups is always worth it, even if they don't catch fish.  Figure medium sized minnows or smelt for salmon anywhere from just under the ice to '10 down.  Sight fish for the herring with Pimps.  Watch for the gill flair, don't wait for the thump.  Learning this stuff is mostly about getting out and doing it.

It's usually just a here and there thing with the herring when i go out if i get a nice school come through and see them in time to get em' you could get your limit if  your fast enough and they are willing to hit and stick around for a second or two. I think they average about 12-14

People do spear herring in the bay. Early morning seems best, but I have had them come through in the middle of the day also. Remember catching some that were close to 20 in. Must have counted 30+ tents out on the bay today. People were as far north as the lighthouse, no one off squaw beach yet.

If you suspect people are spearing, don't go any where near them. They will spook the fish and you won't hook any.

No shanties at the beach yet.  The ice took a bit of a beating North of the lighthouse this week but is still there, about up to the tire shop.  I'm going to wait a couple days before trying it.  We fished East of the lighthouse today in 140' on 3-4" of ice.  Started early a.m. in 75' fishing for herring and jigging the bottom for lakers.  Caught a couple of each then went deeper and bobbed for lake trout.  About a dozen small ones this afternoon, a couple 3# biggest.  The ice we fished last week is about 7-8" now.  Quite a few fishermen this morning all around the bay.  Nice day again tomorrow so get out while you can.

Whitefish hole and points South are fine. Machines and 4-wheelers on the ice.   Near the lighthouse had about 60 tents lined up this morning, all walkers. The area a little North is rough but seems to be glued back together enough for a couple guys to be wandering around on and to the North.  Not me.  Next week if it's still there I'll try.

Real good even after all the wind.  Lot of tents at Squaw beach today with a few out to the NE deeper fishing lakers.  Even a few tents coming on from the East side.  Couldn't tell if they were up by Whirly-gig or not and can't say how the ice is there, so be careful if you get the urge to try.  The ice from Mission to the North was broken up along the shoreline and looked pretty thin.  Need cold weather for a week or two.

We went out from Jentoft's dock Saturday. The ice was extremely rough to travel on. It was all jumbled up with chunks sticking up into the air everywhere. I saw a few people with snowmobiles or 4 wheelers out there but they had to travel very slowly and pick their way through the slabs of ice. There are also a lot of slabs under the surface. A couple came out in the afternoon and drilled a hole with a power auger. I heard the woman laughing that they didn't hit the lake before the auger bottomed out! I had a couple of holes where the ice was between 1' to 2' thick and another hole where the ice was 8" thick. The fish were hitting sporadically and I lost a few while hauling them up but we didn't catch anything.

Made a trip up yesterday and fished off Ford Dr.  Between my dad and I we went 3-10? keeping two 20 and 25. First fish I had on bent my jig strait and got off! We were fishing 155-180' and had most of our action in the morning. Fishing turned off once the sun came out and the wind started blowing from the east.

ya i'm also wondering about how much ice there is of pequaming or whirl-i-gig. I wanna take my fourwheeler out there but i don't know how safe it is anymore with this warm weather.

We are heading out there tomorrow. My fishing partner was there today and said that there was about 8 1/2 inches of ice. If you are out there look for a multi-colored shack with fiberglass garage door panels on each end and green, brown, and tan nylon fabric on the sides and top. We will also have a camo deer hunting blind or two. If it is real nice we may not be in the tents though. We will probably be getting out there around 11 to 11:30 or so and will stay till dark.

Went off the whirli-gig today between the 3 of us we got 2 lakers and missed a ton of em' they were not really hitting just a few pecks and they were done. The ice varied alot in thickness out there one hole we had 4", another we had 6" and the other we had 10" :P

We went out from the Whirl I Gig today too. We got out there about noon or so and there wasn't much happening. Very few bites and 2 fish between 5 of us.

I saw that all permanents are off the ice and no vehicle traffic. The ice is just about gone, just need some south wind to take it to sea.
