Barbee Chain 12/6 & 7
« on: Dec 08, 2008, 06:49 PM »
Toothy Critter, Rico, and me were able to get out on the Barbee Chain this weekend and get a hardwater fix.  Rico took about 20 decent gills and perch home on Sat. evening, and we let several others go, including some decent bass.  Here are some pictures.

We were on a good 3-3 1/2" of ice on Sat. but the snow started weighing it down in the thinner places so we left a bit early.  Back early on Sunday after 11 degree overnight temps, and things were good and solid again.  The bite was tough on Sunday, but it was great to be on the ice the FIRST weekend in December!!!  What a blessing for all of us hardwater worshipers.

Had a great time.  And this early in my ice fishing career, dinks are about all I'm catching!  :)

Hope to see you on the ice soon.  I think I'm heading WAY north this weekend.

I've seen that Devin "Toothy Critter" character out on the ice before, never was much good at putting fish on top of the ice but was usually pretty fun to fish with.  Also I recognize that gaff and know that it is mine.  I haven't seen it for a few years but know that next time I see him I will ask for it back.

Your name wouldn't happen to be Darrin would it?  :)

Jimmy & Egbert:

Devin was talking over the weekend about a friend of his in the Syracuse area named Darrin.  I asked if he was talking about Egbert, and he said no.  I was wondering if this Fishking was the same guy, especially since Devin said they blow each other smoke all of the time.

Took another guys gaff?  What is that about?  Do you drill a hole right next to his and fish out of his back pocket?  Make sure you use the exact same jig he is.  If you don't have that one bring scissors so you can clip it.  You can show a photo of you next time with his jig also.

Devin (ToothyCritter) confirmed that Fishking is his friend Darrin.

No harm, no foul.

Yep, its Darin.  Devin's lucky that I had to work that weekend or I could have gave him some more lessons again.  He's been trying to outfish me since 2002 and the closest he ever came was a tie once, and only once.  But he has never had bragging rights or a victory.  Ask Devin about the time on Lake Michigan when I caught about 6 perch to each one he caught.  Also tell Devin to take my fishing pictures off of his MySpace page, he put them up there and took credit for the fish that I caught.  Tell Devin to watch out because I've got some new ice flies I've tied and I may be even more dangerous this year. Looks like a warm weekend so it may be a while but his time is nearing.

Got back out on the same spot yesterday.  VERY slow.  Fished from 8:30 - 2:30 and only caught one small gill and one 10" bass.  Lots of lookers and follows, but very few takers.  I swaped about 10 different jigs in and out, and used mousies, spikes, and waxies.  Left at 2:30 and went to a friend's pond where I quickly caught a nice gill, then that was it.  Off of the ice before dark after taking a slide across the ice when the wind caught the side of the Scout.  That was an interesting ride.. my first.  Broke the globe on my new lantern, first trip out with it.  Ordered some spare mantles and globes online tonight.  I'll be ready again on Sunday if the ice is good.
