Perch Eyes?
« on: Nov 08, 2009, 05:48 PM »
When people say they use perch eyes...do you mean the whole eye (ball, gelantinous stuff, etc) or just the harder clear/white eyeball?

Use the whole EYE  ;)   Just feed the hook through and yank it out this works better if they are frozen or you could use a knife and pop em out that way

I too use the whole eye
give me 5 good reasons to head home and I'll pretend to consider it.

Use the big loop of a paperclip.

After bending the small loop out for better leverage,
insert in front edge of the eye and push straight in until slight resistance is felt,
push to rear edge of eye at an angle to the rear,
put the thumb of that hand at rear of eye,
and lift the clip and eye out angling forward.
Do this slowly and you get the optic nerve still attached.
This added attractor, dangling off the eye makes it "killer".

I use a paperclip as well, they seem to be the perfect size. I don't use them often as I find it us a pain and I don't find they work better then other baits I use

Just pop them out with your thumb when they are fresh. Push down on the edge of the eye socket till the eye pushes up, and push your finger under it. A few will pop, but there's a reason they have 2 eyes. Try to get the "new guy" to put a few in his lower lip to keep them from freezing, then thump him on the back a minute or so later. Good for a laugh on a slow day!

The whole eye works pretty well on a barbed hook eye stays on for a long time, only problem the barb makes it a bit more difficult to get teh fish off the hook quickly at times.  I will use a needle nose pliers to squeeze the barb down and then tip the hook with an eye with a piece of red rubberband.  Works great when the bite is on, keeps them in the hole.

Took forever to get a perch using fatheads or waxies...once i finally got one i immediately popped out an eye and tipped a pimple with it.  Then the fishing got good...nothing huge over 12 inches but took home a decent meal and threw back just as many...convinced the perch eyes were the key to my success.
