Moosehead Lake - Rockwood
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 09:21 AM »
Don't ask me why, but after growing up in Maine and ice fishing for quite a while now, I'm headin' uptah Rockwood to fish Moosehead for the first time. Anyone know of any good places to get on the lake in Rockwood? Good fishing spots? I'd like to fish brookies and togue. I've done a lot of salmon fishing this year so far. Had great luck at Alligator, caught a football at Long Lake, and a bunch of small ones on Green Lake. So any suggestions or help for fishing Moosehead around Rockwood would be greatly appreciated! I was thinking somewhere around Mt. Kineo but I don't have a sled or wheeler and figured that'd be a long walk across the ice. Unless anyone knows of a good cheap sled rental place where I can rent a sled for the day?

I went down to the sporting goods store and got a new rod and reel for my wife.....pretty good trade, don't ya think?

Ketchup and grease instead of catch and release

"Hey, ya gotta flag, oh, wait, it went back down."

Just got back from moosehead. We were headed a ways down the lake when one of the sleds began to over heat so we ended up in front of the west outlet off some small island. We fished about 40 fow and caught more togue then i can remember. Smelts just off bottom.

Try Moosehead condo rentals- see ad at top of this page under lodging/cabins. Really nice, and prices are per/room, not per person,so if you split it between a couple of people it's cheaper than a smelt shack. Just stay away from the mouth of Moose River and you should be okay walking  out. I would ask some locals on the best place to set up. They probably won't tell you their best spot, but maybe their second best if they like you-  lol.

Check with the bait shop in rockwood. I think it's called Moosehead Bait but not 100% sure. Located in the vicinity of the bridge that crosses Moose River.

You can get onto the lake right at the Rockwood Landing. It has good lake access and plenty of parking.
