still chasing that big slob gill....any ideas?
« on: Feb 19, 2013, 09:17 PM »
I know they are there! Its a small pond and i caught some close to 9 inches a month ago....now im back into the dinks. No electronics...thats for next year.  Any thoughts? Pond is maybe at its deepest 10 to 12 foot. Some weeds but alot of brush in areas. Ive tried slug bugs, scud bugs, ice mites, spikes, wax worms, minnows.....help!

Fish it at different times than you normally would. They are there, they just choose to eat when they want to, not necessarily when you want them to. When in doubt, change it up. The situation under the surface is always changing and one needs to understand and be willing to change with it

My biggest gills through the ice have come the same way.  suspended.  loners.  Deeper than the schools of gills.

You find big bulls where they are, there in the weeds but so are a ton of other size fish and almost always the small fish hit first.I did best on first ice this year kept quite a few 8.5 -9.75.   We had thaws and refreezes this year and the fishing has not been the same. The big ones hit the smallest jigs for me and bite the lightest. In the small pond they might be in the deepest water. I fish a 250 ac, lake a fish in 11-12 fow with coontail weeds.

Ive thrown every color imaginable. Bright dark weird you name it. Only thing i havent done is an early morning bite....maybe thats the ticket. One thing i havent tried was a small jighead with a spaghetti ball leg on it. Had good luck early ice but went away from it.

I chased bull gills at a lake for a couple seasons until I found them in a shallow, weedy bay w/ my Aqua-Vu. W/out actually seeing the pods of gills on the cam I'd still be looking for them there  ;D

Have you tried a tiny Sweedish Pimple yet? Took my biggest gill on one this year with a few spikes.

This was about a month ago. The tackle box is 9 inches long so this is right at that or just under. These are what im after! As you can see the fish inhaled the jig....i think this may be the first jig i send down tomorow

try bigger jigs and lures, at the very least you'll catch consistently bigger fish since the dinks won't be able to fit their mouths over the hook.
