Title: I got a bone to pick with Ice Shanty members
Post by: lenny 308 on Nov 17, 2009, 07:01 PM
Hi all, I'm new to the board and as the title says I got a bone to pick.  I was thinking of trying ice fishing with my two boys(3 and 4 years old) so I thought I would build a cheap simple shelter.  I looked for plans on the internet and found this site.
Now the bone to pick.  After searching this site for a while I am totally hooked and haven't even dropped a line through the ice yet.  This will only result in constant whining and complaining from my wife about money spent on gear and never being home in the winter.  A big thanks to all of you.
By the way I can hardly wait for ice.  This is a great site and from what I can tell so far full of great guys who are willing to help a newbie like me.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be building a shack and posting my progress on this site.
Thanks to all of you who have already replied to my posts and answered the questions I have had, but be warned, I am sure there will be plenty more as I try to learn the ins and outs of the sport.

Lenny

Just bring your wife along. With a shelter and heat she will have fun. She also will have a better understanding why you need 800+ jigs, 9 rods and all the other goodies. The only drawback will be the expense for her collection of 800+ jigs, rods, etc.

Step 1,  Sell off all your worldly possessions not related to fishing...you will need the money to resupply yourself for your new passion.

Step 2, Let your boss know you will periodically be late for work, sometimes not even not showing up at all if the bite is on.

Step 3, Dont buy anything "entry level" when it comes to gear, just buy the good stuff up front, this will save you alot of shopping time down the road.  Maybe involve the wife in the shopping part, women love to shop...on second thought, dont involve her, it will only result in you buying alot of entry level stuff.

step 4, post alot...we love to see the progress of a new addict!..welcome to your new obsession.

Fish Finder (Vex, Marcum, Showdown), auger and a couple small ice rods is all you need to start.  Half the fun is thinking of what you're gonna buy next!  Of course up there in Saskachewan the ice can get thick, hand auger might be a little tough come mid winter.  Good to start with though, and always handy to keep as a back up in the event the power auger (you will have!) decides to misbehave.

Well I think I am already done for.  I priced out the material I will need to build a shack already and will be hopefully picking everything up this weekend.  My old man is an auction sale junky and I told him to watch for ice fishing stuff a couple of weeks ago.  He got me two hand augers, an 8 and a 6 and an old strikemaster (I think), it is a gas powered auger.  The gas job needs a new gas tank and a little work but I have already had it running.  The best part is he got all three for $55.00.  I figure that should be a good start.  What do you guys think.

I don't think that you're really picking bones, rather, you're picking brains.  There are lots of good ones on this board to pick.  Just watch out for the rest of 'em, LOL, they're a motley crew!

Welcome to the best ice fishing site on the web!

Ok, you got the auger issue covered.  Make sure you bring one of the hand augers with the power auger.  Power augers, especially one thats not tried and true because you haven't used it before, could die out on the ice.  Great to have a hand backup.  Start thinking about a fish finder of some sort.  Initially I used to use the soft water humminbird from the boat, it'll tell you your depth and if there's fish down there, but one of the flashers like a Vex, Marcum, Humminbird or the Showdown are the best.  You can watch your lure go down and position it while watching the fish react to it in real time.  They will definitely increase your catch.

Oh no, a Riders fan :P

Yep good site, found it the same way as you looking to build a shack, never did, but I sure have a lot of gear.

You live in a good spot for this sport, I don't know what lakes you have nearby, but you might want to start with some pike fishing (I assume just like here in 'Toba, you have lots of pike everywhere), all you really need for that other then the auger is tip-ups and quick strike rigs, build a fire and enjoy the company of friends that you get hooked too (I think many of us start this way). Then you can move on to the jigging and sonar and the shack, heater, snowmobile, 4x4, and ...............

I`ll give you a tip. Build the shanty big enough for the four of you and take the wife with, that way she can see how much the boys love to be out their and it will make future expenditures in the sport that much easier. I know first hand I have a 16 and 19 year old. Make sure you buy plenty of Tip-ups boy are you going to have some fun.

Sno machine, 4wheeler, gas auger, hand auger, spud, permi shanty, popup shanty, jiminy creepers, JetSleds, trailer to haul it all, dedicated truck to haul the trailer, bait tanks, aeration, heaters, clothing,,,

I can meet that grand and raise it a couple more...  ;)

I will be 75 in less then twenty days - it took me 73 years before i could be talked into sitting inside a Calm Pro shelter instead of a five gallon plastic pail. It took me another year to buy a small heater. Both on sale which turns a blowing gale into a "not quite perfect" ice fishing day almost any day.
Gathered the remaining toys needed for the sport - but believe me your boys will never forget it or you for being out there with them.  Priceless is the fraternity of folks you will meet also enjoying the sport with you.

Start off small, and get things that you need.

Gas Auger - helps to keep you mobile.
Vexilar - Helps you catch fish.
Portable Ice Shanty - Helps you stay when the weather gets a little challenging.

Those three items will get you darn close to a grand or more in $$$.

And we haven't even talked about creature comforts,  heater, nice fishing equipment, cook stove, etc.

I got wicked deals on all my equipment. I basically won't buy anything unless I at least FEEL like I'm getting a deal.
Portable-$150 on E-Bay.
Sonar-Way old Marcum (10 years I think) $200. It does the job and has been faithful.
Auger-I sold my gas auger because I found it unnessecary for the amount of ice I have to drill. It's rarely more than 24". Finbore 8" $120... I think.
Quad- Same as the auger. I only used it to drive to where I was fishing and drive back to the truck. I never rode for the sake of riding so I started walking and saved $60 a month.
I use a small Sunflower type heater just to take the edge off and heat up soup. I don't mess around when it comes to actual tackle though. With all the cash I saved on general comfort items, I can justify spending more on rods, reels, jigs, and terminal tackle.

It's a great addiction to have. My wife would rather I spend money on my outdoor hobbies than going to bars and drinking and such. Buy the basics now, couple of rods and a flasher is all you really need. Make sure you like the sport before you really dump money in. Then towards the end of the year you can get stuff on clearance and stock up. That's how I usually get my stuff. Watch sales and second had items.

My first year I sat on a bucket all season. I had an old LFP-150 Lowrance fish finder that used 2 lantern batteries, a couple of rod and reel combos and a few safety items(creepers, ice picks, etc). Then I had to get suckered in to other stuff (Showdown -$229, IceGator - $389, HT flip-over shelter - $200, new HT hand auger - $60, lots of jigs ($100's), fly boxes to hold all my jigs - $20.00, new boots - $90, IceArmour suit - $200, Underwater camera - $100, Mr. Buddy heater - $70, rod bags - $50, rod holders - $20) There are lots more I didn't buy. Once you are hooked, you better expect to invest.

Welcome to the Shanty!!
