Ice prediction
« on: Nov 30, 2023, 06:50 PM »
What day will be the first for you to walk on hard water this year?
I'll be generous and say December 21..lol.
I already told my girlfriend if we had another crappy winter I was selling my ice gear and buying a fly fishing drift boat.
Hope I see some folks on the water this year. Didn't get to socialize with anyone last year.

I'm not particularly hopeful this year. It has been pretty warm overall this fall, and all the major long term forecasts are calling for a warm winter overall.

Still... I'll guess around January 5th, because we seem to get a bit of a cold shot around the New Year more years than not.

I think January 12th is when we all get out there.

I've read so many weather outlooks for this winter and most of them say warmer than usual, but the bright side is that there should be less precipitation. Maybe this year will be less worrying about snow insulating the ice.

I will be on the ice on January 2nd, somewhere around Lake Preston, South Dakota.  I have a 3 day Snobear trip booked.  Nothing like ice fishing in jeans and a sweatshirt when it is 10 below outside!

Not looking good for 2023 finish on ice. Ten day which is all that i kinda believe. Atleast for a trend. Shows above temps. At best it normally takes atleast a week for good solid ice to form after it finally does turn cold so thats why i'll predict no ice in 23. If we don't have good ice by first week of january it likely will be another short season at best.

Unless the weather takes a really drastic turn and breaks all the models, I'm figuring on another really short, spotty season like last year.

I'll sell all my ice gear and all wheel drives vehicles to ensure the rest of you get a good ice season...pretty sure that's how it works

I don't even guess anymore. My gear is still in storage. Wasn't worth getting it out last year.  Hard to get excited about something that may not even happen. I'll at least make a trip north somewhere though.

Temps are hovering around a freezing average for the next 10 days... won't get my hopes up to be out before the new year, but things are certainly trending in the right direction. Just need that jet stream to dip down and send us into a 48-72 hour ice age to really get things started!

Skim ice on the channels here this morning. It won't be here long but the lakes are ready to freeze up when the temps cooperate.

Well it didn't take long to change the forecast.  Looks like the first week of  January the temps are supposed to drop, but it will probably change by then.

I'm more than ready to get on the ice as I'm sure you all are. I'm sure January will get some lakes in the northern part of the state some fishable ice but down here around muncie will probably be later than that if at all but we will see. 😊

It'll be January 26 but a glorious February with solid ice and below freezing temps through the whole month. We might fish into early March??

Forecast is starting to looking a little more promising over the next week, but ice is gonna be really slow going and dependent on wind.

If it lays down enough to skim up we might end up with something. Got a lot of overnight low 20s, but highs right around/just above freezing in the 10 day local forecast now.

Getting to that point where I'm going to be obsessive with looking at the 10 day.... it's for sure trending in the right direction, just waiting on the day where I load up wunderground and i see that line drop wayyyyyy below 32.

Same here... I get to be a weather checking addict when it starts teasing us like this  :roflmao:

It's better, but still really marginal. Even a 3-5° drop from what they're showing now would really do the trick. 🤞

I DON'T SEE MUCH OF A REAL TREND OTHER THAN IT GETTIN BACK CLOSE TO THE NORMAL HIGHS AND LOWS. lOWS IN THE UPPER TEENS TO LOW TWENTIES AND HIGHS ALMOST ALWAYS REACHING THE FREEZING MARK. YEA IT MIGHT MAKE A COVER BUT NOT REAL GOOD ICE ALL OVER. A COUPLE SUUNNY DAYS WILL MAKE GETTING ON AND OFF THE LITTLE ICE YOU CAN GET ON A HIGH RISK FOR GETTING WET. WE'LL NEED A DEEP FREEZE AND THATS NOT COMING ANYTIME SOON. GOOD NEWS IT CAN HAPPEN PRETTY FAST BUT NORMALLY CAN BE SEEN COMING A WEEK TO TEN DAYS OUT. THEN MAYBE THREE DAYS AND WE'RE ON.

With all this global warming mumbo jumbo, might not be safe till 3rd week in January. If we are lucky the hard water season will last for 4 to 6 weeks. If you are on the heavy side like me than shorter for sure. Good luck to all. STAY SAFE.
