Saginaw Bay
« on: Feb 24, 2019, 01:26 PM »
I was on the Bay the 19-20th.  Been looking at Navionics.  Does anyone fish out of the Standish or Au Gres areas? The contours in the areas look tasty. Wondered what the ice conditions were like further north in the bay.

We were up that way last weekend, ice was 6-12 in. Couldn't get across the crack all day without a sled or planks so we didn't try deeper water. But This was just posted on Facebook less than 10min ago...

Funniest thing about ice fishing for me is when people who know nothing about ice activities try to warn me about the dangers of the ice...

Thanks for the input quack.  Is there always a problem with a crack further north and on the west side of the bay?  How is the fishing up there. I plan of being back next year.

Cracks are always "working" or moving on the west side, depending on where you are they can be close to shore or up to a mile out before you come up on the first major crack. Time of year and weather plays a role but cracks are always gonna form.

Ice is toast, totally gone in some areas due to the 50&60 mile gusts. People saying ice piles 30 ft and higher already tonight

This is a blessing for the walleye run.... The influx of warm water combined woth the bay opening is gonna push the walleye in for the spawn.... As soon as the water goes back down they should be in

Friend shared a photo - When Mother Nature wants to blow, she can blow pretty darn hard.  Took 18" thick Saginaw Bay ice and made short work of it - all stacked up on the east shore now....

Can check Michigan-Sportsman website
PartyMarty posted aerial video. Also on YouTube
Bay is busted up bad.
Open water 1/4 to 1/2 mile out on west side
And east side, as pictures above showed shoves that are 30' to 40' tall mounds
Southern area from Bay City to Qsee is iffy at best.
And the river is done with open water down the center in lots of areas and with runoff, still flowing heavy
