Need help ... ATV laws n regards for ice
« on: Feb 20, 2019, 05:26 PM »
Hello everyone.   Thinking about taking a ice fishing trip sometime in the next week or 2.    Going to want to take the atv on some of these lakes to get around.

What are the laws n regards for me to be able to do this legally. Such as

Stickers for the atv

Tow bar for shanty -is it needed or will the rope to tow be ok

And equipment needed to ride it legally

If there is anything I have missed please let me know.   Any info on this would be greatly appreciated thanks you all in advance

I know u need a orv sticker and can’t ride double unless it’s designed for 2 people. I think they changed helmet law, correct me if wrong, something about if going slow u don’t need oneheard something about 20 mph

Ok so I'll need a orv sticker for sure and I'll bring and wear a helmet just to be sure I don't get in trouble for that.

Will I need a tow bar for the sled or no?

no tow bar required in Michigan, no helmet under 10 MPH unless you are on land at ramp then they can give ticket if so inclined.
ORV sticker required but no trail permit on ice.

I don't think that he law requires a tow bar, but it should ,for your own sanity .  if you stop suddenly, the rope can get wrapped around the rear axle of your ATV ,if you don't pay attention.  (heard of this happening, of course its never happened to me, I'm to smart for that !) Also heard that a Jet Sled Can Tip over in certain snow depths on the ice ( again, never happened w/ me!) . Here is an easy ,cheap suggestion for a tow bar. run some rope  through a 6'-8' piece of 1" PVC  . Tie a loop & put it on the hitch on the ATV . The rigid PVC will help keep the sled from running up under the ATV ,when you stop.

Lots of snow and sluch on some of the lakes right now. You may have a hard time getting around on an atv now.
