Better check the local regulations too. Gaffs are illegal for ice fishing in some states......

I use an old spinning rod handle with about 18in of rod left on it and a  treble hook epoxied into the end. I also put a piece of swim noodle on the shaft before putting the hook on to keep it from snagging on things when not in use.

i know i dont gaff a fish like you would think, i use it to slide up the gill plate and help me lift as you would normally grab/hanlde a pike......I catch and release this way with no issues of harming the fish.

I think that jannesnetcraft or mudhole makes a kit to build really nice ones to.

i had one of the cheap ones from walmart that was rusted together so i cut it up and took an old spinning rod that my brother broke and cut it down sharpened the point and glued it into the rod but i took a 243 case and cut the end off so it makes a clean transition to the gaff , my dad did the same thing i have to find his and take pics of each i still have to throw a loop of rope on mine, i cant find my camo para cord..

its the case (AKA Brass) from the ammo that was shot up at the johnsburg fish and game club my dad reloads for all of our guns so i grabbed a case and cut the end off just above the primer and glued it on dad did the same with a 30-30, heres a pic you can kinda see them in the pics the brass right on the end of the rods that taper down to the hook,

I made one using a broken aluminum arrow.  Wrapped duct tape around the top for a handle and epoxied a large single hook into the other end.  If I get around to it I plan on replacing the duct tape with the cork grip from a broken rod.  I'm hoping that will keep it from disappearing down a hole some time in the future.  I also wrapped one of the give away stick on tape measures around the arrow so it serves 2 purposes.

File the barb off of the hook before taking out fishing  to avoid sticking yourself.  That still may happen but at least you wouldn't have to worry about getting the barb out.

for paddlefishing in the spring i use a full stick of 1/2" conduit with a 4" u bolt welded to it and ground down to a point hauled in many fish well over 50 lbs with it could use a smaller u bolt for ice fishing though

I don't have one but a buddy of mine took an old iron shaft golf club, a saturday afternoon, a cutting torch, and a 4 1/2" grinder and made one of the most badda$$ gaffs I have ever seen.  And it works.

2 weekends ago, ice drinking, i lost my 20+ year old gaff.     i couldn't find one anywhere near as good/well built so, i decided to make my own.   a $2.00 golf club from salvation army store.  a red vinyl coated bike hook from wallyworld.   cut the head off the golf club, screwed the bike hanger/hook into the shaft, checked the fit, removed the hanger/hook, added a nice fat glob of epoxy to the threads and screwed it back in. the next day, cut the tip to an angle (sharpened). now have a 38 inch long gaff for about $3.00. added some orange duct tape to the club shaft incase i drop it on the ice. put a screw eye on the end and tied off a hunk of boot lace for a lanyard.   still under $3.00. not made in China and i can really reach into the hole with it without kneeling down.       sweet.

In mid May the ice around here can be 4 foot.
For the average size Siifish whitefish we use 10" holes.
I dont always need a gaff, but when I need it, I Really need it!
My gaff also can reach the bottom of the hole, sometimes my kids will stick a lure hook on the bottom of the hole, the 5' gaff end is just right for pushing the stuck lure loose.
When you have a hook straightening fish in the hole, the long gaff works great to jab that gaff shaft down and stun the fish, then work the gaff up in their gills.
