Leave them in a cool area (basement)...if not, put a frozen bottle of water in with them for the night..

keep em cool.  But dont put them in the back of an open pick up for the ride to the lake unless the container is insulated like a cooler...the water chills too fast and they'll go belly up in just a plain 5 gallon bucket...there is a fine balance to keeping them cool and acclimating them to cooler water temps and not shocking them with a drastic change in temp.

well the lake wampter is about 33 at the top and warms as it gets deeper...so I try to keep them as cool as I can...45 or below is my target temp...but I stopped measuring temp for shiners...now smelts is amother story....I manage their temp and monitor it more closely.

wampter....lol...how did that happen?  TYPO... I meant temperature.

I have even heated water on my stove and poured that water into cold water to warm up the bait...and they come around...saves the day.

3 days before I go fishing I put the supply of minnows I want for the trip from my bait tank into a 5 gal pail  that has an aquarium filter and air stone in the fridge   brings water temp down to 38 that fridge is dedicated to beer and bait    I have thanks to no bites have been able to keep the same minnow lively in the lake for hours  one of my sons lasted 5 + hours

Hey Dave,
I talked to my dad last night and he said he would try to find a 35 gal. drum at work today...that means no more messin around with 5 doz. shiners in our bait pails! talk to me today and we'[ll figure out some kinda aerator/heater system.

if you dont have a cool place to keep them ,bury them in about a ft. of snow in a 5gal. bucket. theyll stay cool without freezing. ive done it for years before i set up a tank to keep em' in. good luck!
