keep saltwater fishing free!!!!
« on: Mar 12, 2009, 10:42 AM »
hey guys, i hijacked these links from a couple guys on MFF. so it's a bit off topic as it does not deal with the hardwater.
http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/100582.html

please please fill this out guys (and gals) and submit! our right to fish the saltwater for free is under attack. we need to stand up and speak out against paying another fee to fish the ocean. so please support this bill that will bury the the idea of passing of the saltwater fishing license fee!

saltwater fishing will be regulated on the federal level if it is not done by the state first,  if its gonna happen anyway better to keep the $ in the state.

just sucks for the handful of times i take the kids mackerel fishing every year.

better learn to hold your breath thats what they will tax you for next.....

I didnt think there was anything said that Maine had to charge for the license.  I thought it just said we had to be licensed.  Why cant they just
make us pay an small agent fee for a complimentary saltwater license.  Its just another tax worded a little different.

I sent mine.  I just wish I could of added that I will not be buying a license although I have fished the ocean quite often previously.  Im usually fishing freshwater and cant justify buying a saltwater license for one or two trips a year.

You don't expect the State of Maine to pass up an opportunity to squeeze us a little more do you? Especially when they can blame it on the Feds.

if you had read the newspaper article in the first link, you would have seen where it says the feds are not asking to charge anyone a fee for fishing the salt, it's the state that is tryin to pass the bill so we do have to pay for a saltwater license. the second link tells about the bill, that if passed, will defeat the saltwater fee and just have a FREE saltwater anglers registry. so if we take a stand and protest enough, it wont happen.

hey if the law says I need to get on eI need to get one.  I know Newhampshire passed a law for it.  The only thing though it is going to get rather expensive for me since I am going to have to get a Mass, NH and Maine.

I wonder how it's gonna be for us charter folk. a fee per fisherman on board or a "charter fee" for the year that covers anyone aboard your boat?  either way the whole thing is a crock. esp cause I spend half the summer and all of the fall 20+ miles from shore  ???  so dumb

Well, most of us fishermen allready have a Maine fishing licence, and it is not free. Why should the people along the coast be able to fish without one? Every fishermen that harvest fish from the sea also must have a lic., and don't get a free ride. Yes, you want to fish, buy a fishing lic., or leave your gear at home.  ;D

I live in a state with no shore line ,I love to surf fish . it is not so much as to having to buy a license ,it's having to buy one everywhere we fish the coast,if it is a federal mandate it should be good for the entire Atlantic coast maybe you think we need to buy a license for each lake also. Not looking for any free ride just a fair shake.BB

anglers in maine have been able to fish the salt for free for 100's of years, i don't see any reason to change it now. the feds just want a database and registry of anglers, not a license fee. the state is the one that wants the fee. if the states politicians want a license fee so bad, why don't they take it out of their own pockets? a saltwater license is complete bullcrap, pure and simple.

After what i see on here last night concerning canoe licenses, im afraid theres plenty on here that dont agree with your thoughts! :o Its socialism at its finest! If one group has to pay, then everyone should pay. I would never have thought that my maine born/bred brothers would think this way ::) I agree 100% with you, when i go catch some mackeral once a summer,i shouldnt have to pay for a stinkin license to do it.

dude im about as far from being a socialist as you can get but i think its a good idea to register the kayaks and canoes why not spread around the cost instead of putting it to us that hunt and fish ??? thats not even close to socialisim its called fairness

it's simply the reason is canoes and kayaks only have to be registered if they have a motor on them!

The way i see it is thus,,, we need to buy hunting/fishing licenses to support all the baggage that comes with enjoying what we do.Someone figured we needed all the wardens and bioligists,to go along with all the stocked fish, and seeing as how we cant police are selves,we cant be trusted. Ive been fishing/hunting for over 3o years, and thats the way its always been.I/we aint going to change that, but introducing more taxes is a bunch of bull! Every spring i pick my wife a pail of fiddleheads. Should i have to pay 18-20 dollars to do this? Some places that i hunt, it is so much shorter/easier to paddle across the pond, rather than walk 2 miles threw swamp,to get to where im going, should i have to pay 18-20 dollars? Up here, the double ended canoe has been a tool that we use for years, and years. Why should we have to pay now? Should i have to license my chainsaw to saw up my winters wood? Back to the topic, the comercial gill netters/trawlers killed the ground fishery off the maine coast. Nothing left but mackeral, and now i need to have a license to catch these? More licenses and registrations are just killing the common man.How much more can a simple, humble person afford?

A lot of good points made on this thread but...by 2011 Uncle Sam says that everyone will be required to have the license, so we might as well keep the money here.

The present lobbying MAY delay the state from getting anything done right away but overall you are "peeing against the tide"! ;D

Well, if its the federal goverment, then a person cant win.But until then the state ought to stay out of my wallet. Federal is already out there,(marine patrol) state gets involved and the next thing you know,we will have salt water state wardens, with more saleries to pay for :(
