Getting the split ring on little Swedish Pimples.
« on: Dec 22, 2011, 08:26 PM »
First, why can't they just put the dang split ring on at the factory????!!!!! :%$#!:

Second, how do you guys get them put on? I always end up with the ring sailing across the room and getting lost, especially on the little ones...

Can I have some tips? I keep my fingernails very short, and I have fumble fingers to begin with. This is frustrating!

I have been doing this for how long? That's the first I have ever heard of them. Looks like a fairly common item too.... ::)

Thanks!

I use eye glass screwdriver to pry the ring open and stick a small tooth pick in there to a) for something to hold and b) keep it open to slide it on the jig.

I just wedge the tip of my knife to split it open. Never really had much trouble but don't slip! Even a small knife in the thumb stings a bit...

I quit doing that when I stabbed myself in the palm with a Mora Knife that was sharp enough to shave with.... ;D

Again X2. It is worth the couple bucks to not have a hole in your hand.

Use to do the flathead screwdriver or just finger nails to pry the split rings open but have gone to using a splitring plier.
For more information read my MN nice journal

That works too, I just prefer a direct tie to a split ring.

I use my fingernails. I also get cuts under my fingernails if I do a few in a row. Fast and easy for me.

Honestly I've used swedish pimples year round and if you use a snap swivel it makes no difference.  At least for myself I've seen no difference in catch rate of fish whether jigging, trolling, or casting.

I never owned a pair of split ring pliers. I've used at least three methods that come to mind. Most frequently I use my pocket knife, I don't keep it real sharp anymore intentionally. The least used and most often blood drawing is to use a large hook or jig, not recommended  ;). The best way I found to do it was with a pair of locking forceps. I grab just one side in the forceps.

Have your kids do them for you. I too keep my fingernails cut short as possible. I just sit down when my kids are around and have them put the rings and the "flasher" petals on.   Steve
