Deadsticking for trout?
« on: Dec 25, 2007, 05:09 AM »
Does anyone here deadstick for trout? For the last 2 weeks I have been hammering the rainbow trout in shallow water , 3'- 10'  while deadsticking jigs such as demons, frostees etc, and flies tipped with waxies. I set up my UL Micro rods,30" in a 30' radius around me while jigging. The rods are set in spring type rod holders produced by Outdoor creations. This method has served me well for the kast 3  years or so. My reels are Okuma ul 10s with drag set loose. Flouresent strike indicators are attached to the rod tips for strike visibility. Usualy limit out in 2- 3 hrs. If you wish to relocate you just reelup and move.

I have also used minnows but the rainbows seem to like bugs n worms better here in Ct. I would love to try for splake, Limekin Lake in Ny state comes to mind.

i deadstick one rod  and jig with my other handheld. i use trout worms, minnows, hellagramites and waxies. I'm not killing them but I've got a bow & a brown this year. the tip ups pretty much present the same way in the water and I would have to say that most of the trout have been cuaght on waxies this season

trout absolutely love a small jig with a waxie just dangling there.  That's how I fish for trout.  Set a rod or two out and let it sit while I jig for panfish.

I have been setting 5 deadstick rods out and jigging but the action is too much. Had to cut back to 3 rods.

We deadstick mostly. Sit around and talk and watch the poles sometimes, and when you're not catchin' anything, just go over there and jig it. I've noticed they'll hit the pole that's not moving rather than the one i'm jigging most of the time though. I just don't know how a jig just sitting there in the water can be more appealing than it moving up and down. I don't argue though....just catch fish....lol.

I like to deadstick for Browns as well. I like to use 1 of those 6"-8" long floats. Since Trout can be finicky you can attened a jigging rod and always look over to see your float because it sticks up way above the hole. Those long thin European floats have less resistance. At times I have set 3 flaots, sit in a lawn chair and just watch. Skein, waxies, shiners will do it.

natural bait swims horizontally in the water , with a little wind action on the line  it gets slight horizontal action.

I usually dead stick chunks of canned corn. If I get a couple taps but no bite, I'll lightly jig the pole an inch or 2 to get the fishes attentiuon and then let it dead stick again. I don't usually get a hit while jigging but as soon as the bait stops moving I'm likely to get a good bite. The fact that corn works good may have something to do with the fact that all the trout out in South Dakota are stocked from farms

I use rod holders, but a guy I fish with just piles up the shavings from the drill and jams the handle of his rod in . We catch 20 inchers and I've never seen him loose a rod yet.  After the shavings freeze for awhile they are pretty firm.
