Title: Sabbathday Fishing Derby
Post by: MG39 on Mar 04, 2018, 05:20 PM
Thought I'd try my luck again this year at the Sabbathday derby, sponsored by the Eagles Club. There was a LOT of folks out there and the fishing was very slow. However there was a few that had some luck. Two browns took the top two spots, weighing in at at a shade under five pounds, followed by two bass and another brown, all around three & a half pounds. I managed a 15" brown early that was released and later a 3# brown that didn't make the cut. Windy day but at least it wasn't cold. As far as the ice goes, woodchip is right, it's going fast and the north shores are breaking up. Went out on the wheeler with solid going, came back in six inches of mealy ice.
Well organized derby, congrats to the Eagles staff.

Definitely a good job to the eagle's crew smooth run an was a good time , except for the fish catching part ,did end up with a couple small bass an a short brown but fishing was pretty slow ,the ice is definitely getting soft an old holes are much bigger now could have easily fell through a few of them out there ,be careful out there an happy fishing.

Wish I had know you were out there!  We had 7 people fishing.  Only flag was the youngest in our group (7 years old).  He caught a 21" eel.

Ha, Ha, I saw that eel in the bucket at the weigh in. The irony is that I caught my only eel through the ice about 30 years ago, on Sabbathday at Black Cove point.

I parked at the Eagles Club and took my wheeler up the lake on the left hand side to a cove, not far from the outlet. If I had known that bass were going to be counted, I would have fished for them with a couple of traps in that cove.

Funny you would mention Eels from Sabbath day  I was trolling around the deep hole on the north end Years ago and hooked into a monster 36" long. Thought I had a huge Brown until I could feel the yank -yank action.

I remember that. Woodchip and I used to troll there with Dave Davis spinners and live bait and we caught numerous eels. There is a substantial dam
at the Bald Hill road on the Royal River that they have to get over.
We used to catch 4or 5 a day while ice fishing Mile Pond.
