The Blackwell Ship Canal [sand piles] was constructed before the Breakwaters were constructed. It traveled into the Tifft Farm and had various docks for coal, iron ore and grain. It was abandoned mainly after the Buffalo Creek was deepened.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

Fished the USC 2/15 from 8:30-5pm. A good 14-15" of ice and only one other person out. Marked a lot of fish, but most had lock jaw during the day. Picked a few keepers up throughout the day, bite really turned on from 2pm on. Fish wouldn't touch whole minnows. Minnow head on a jig took most fish. Ended up with 23 total with a few suspended surprises later in the day. They're there, just gotta work em...

tried out the ship canal today with bad results.... a lot of those big ugly 12"+ shad swimming around. perch seemed non-existent .... was pretty shocked to see what appeared to be a smallmouth bass on the camera  could that even be possible this time of year ???

well I know that but I just didn't think they'd come in until the water is in low 50s, not frozen... even though they are not in season, i just never hear of anyone getting them thru the ice in canal or harbor so I just assume they wouldn't be there

MY Brother in Law and i fished the ship canal last Thursday till about 2PM and only caught 5 keepers and 5 dinks. Ice is 18 inches. There in there but the bite is real slow and intermitant.

I would like to find the fish that were out in the front of the canal a few weeks ago. I am going searching Saturday. There is no reason that they moved back out on the lake this time of year. They just moved to " greener pastures" and our mission is to find them. ;D ;D ;D  Wish me luck.

What happened to all the reports for canal?,doesn't anyone fish it anymore or is it a secret society only with no loose lips?,or has the ice gone bad, heard the breakers were in Cargill bay melting ice, also what's the scoop on Freezer Queen bay ice,the ice on the lake is breaking up pretty fast on the lake so just need to know if it's worth the trip up for me,if anyone wants to join me pm me,wouldn't want to venture new areas by myself, thanks.

I was there on Thursday to check it out and all I got was a couple dinks and chubs. Wasn't marking much on the vex either. I walked from back all the way up to route 5 bridge. ice was at least 12" but thinning out closer to rt.5....... it isn't worth the time. It was hot early ice but the perch came and went in a blink. As far as freezer queen, I can't say. I was there 2 weeks ago and had maybe 10 perch. Not sure about now.

Has anyone stopped by the Canal lately? I hear guys have been out on SBH already, the canal should be well protected from the wind..

drove by n my way to SBH today and didn't see any huts in canal. I didn't check as I was by myself and there was whiteout conditions at the time. if any one does venture in there, be careful as there are a couple drainage pipes that makes for thin ice in spots. similar to areas near small streams on other lakes. I would recommend spudding first.

Was on the Union Ship Canal today.  Ice was at least 10" thick.  A few 8-9 inch perch, occasional 10 inch.  Ice was safe all the way to the lighthouse (South Gap).

Saw u guys down there on way to work on sunday. How do u get down to the ice? Saw a hut between grain elevator, and boat harbor where I never seen anyone fish before. Surprised nobody trying by the tugboat south of grain elevator we used to catch a ton of perch there just a lot of 7 - 8 inchers though.
