I have been reading some of  your posts about building your tip ups. I was wondering if you make the clips that hold the brass trip tube in place? Do you purchase them? I think I saw you have used some Jack Trap components in the past. Inspired me to upgrade some of my own and build some new ones that incorporate some of your upgrades.

Any thoughts / preferences on the cross style versus the H style ti ups?

I've used Jack trap parts in the past, but it gets expensive quickly, so I make or find a substitute, they still have the best alternative for stainless  flag steel ..FWIW... without labor, they cost about $30 to build, less the line... but when your done, you have something custom that performs well in all conditions and will last a life time.

those are 3/16 brass routing clips.. I drill and trim to size.. I get them ( and most of my hardware from McMaster Carr) P/N 9488T16..

I'm glad people are following the build, it's the only reason I post it up here..

I prefer the cross style, I build them with a built in anti rock pad on the top cross piece, the bottom folds into it so it's a nice tidy package..

I made 6 "big boy 36"" H style, they are big and heavy and wider than a normal # 6"  with a 22" H...they are actually a good foul weather tip up because of their weight, I cut squares of roofing rubber that slides over the upright for when snow is blowing and drifting into the trap hole.. but for most circumstance I use my 30" cross style with the 4" spools.. I have a set on mini  ones that are 15", but because of their height, it make for a stiff trigger launch.. I use a 22" flag on them to add a softer release ( learned through trial and many errors) and also modified the trigger for a softer trip.. but on their best day they are not as sensitive or as stable and smooth  as the 30" with the 4" spools.

Finished the last of the drilling  and glued and pinned the stabilizers . All the cross braces and spool are through bolted using stainless or brass threaded inserts, nothing  can work loose or swell when wet.
Now I get to take it all apart to samd, seal and Finnish..no more pictures until it's done..
I've added a stainless big bait clip for large pike or laker baits

She's ready to fish, the threaded inserts were given a dab of polyurethane construction adhesive,  the wind gaurd fashioned out of sheet titanium scrap I have in the shop, the spool are made by HT tackle and hold 1500' I fill them 2/3 full of green dot dacron, then top them off with 250' of 36' #,dacron, the bait clip is a stainless steel plating clip, it has rounded jaws made for holding film or thin X ray plates..the flag is from jack traps, I like their stainless steel, their flags are durable as well

Is their a notch for that trigger rod on the cross stick or is it just opened on the wrong side. Looks like it would pinch the rod and not allow it to function freely. Other then that looks Awesome.

There is no " wrong side"I prefer to have the cross centered on the trigger side.. not behind it.. what are you talking about...nothing pinches anything...the trigger is 2 piece.. there is a wire inside the tube...the cross never touches it and if it did.. it would not matter.

I can assure you Joe, I have no intentions of cranking on the lumber hard enough to crush the trigger tube... A fella would have to be awefully hard on equipment to think that would be a concern...

The way it's set up there is a small gap , it cant hit it.. that tube is thick enough you would need a  vice to crush it..Iv e built maybe 50 the same way
..all still fishing without issues.
We need ice!..forecast ain't looking favorable..we might end up.meeting  at lake X and casting shiners on bobbers and eggs on a bubble so I can give you this thing before I'm old(er) and grey(er)

I knew that's how they were setup Joe, even without seeing it in the pics...
Looking at the cams, Lake x has lost everything it had yesterday... must have been a windy night...
Luckily I've grown more patient with my years, we will get after it soon enough.
