Building the Stealth Bomber
« on: Dec 02, 2021, 08:53 AM »
So, I've got a little time in the evenings so I decided to build another tip up( trap) for a friend..

Normally, when someone striper fishes with me  their first time, I give them a custom striper plug... in this case, the angler is not a die hard striper nut( not yet anyway) but he is a die hard ice fisherman and a lot of fun to fish with.

so instead of a striper plug, he's getting a trap..
the wood is Ash, I cut it 30 BIG LINES long and 4 MEDIUM lines wide... the tube for the trigger is thin wall brass the trigger itself is bent out of 316 stainless … a hole is drilled 1/2 way up to facilitate the shell Gaddus S-3 220 grease for the tube ( the same grease used in jack traps..
Here are a few pictures, I'll update as I go..

Looking forward to joining the elite club of having a Roc custom built trap Joe, and looking forward even more to putting it on the ice next to yours again this season as well as some of the other great guys and ladies I've met on this site. Long live the Ice Shanty Family!

Love it Joe! When you retire and get real bored I want to commission you for a full set just to have. Love your work.

Excited to chum it up with all you deplorables again as well, hopefully more frequently than once a year

Well done Joe - l like the flag hook/split ring - seems like a good design.

Hope the season brings lots of ice and plenty of opportunity to take advantage of it!

Finished the last of the drilling  and glued and pinned the stabilizers . All the cross braces and spool are through bolted using stainless or brass threaded inserts, nothing  can work loose or swell when wet.
Now I get to take it all apart to samd, seal and Finnish..no more pictures until it's done..
I've added a stainless big bait clip for large pike or laker baits

Attention to detail Joe... People that want to build their own traps should be saving this page in their notes.

Kudos `ol boy.  That is some terrific engineering and quality manufacturing.   I am a big fan of wooden traps and collect FishCrafters.   Yours are as high quality as they get.   Enjoy watching those flags fly and spools spin.

Looks great!

Curious about your choice of trigger mechanisms...I always struggle with this type when it's cold out and my gloves are on.

tight lines!

Put your thumb behind the trigger hook the flag with the other.. setting doesnt get any easier..
My question to you is ...do you bait your traps with your gloves on.

Thank you, wait until you see the final product,
I'm still layering spar urethane at this point..2 more coats to go.
The lower half gets primer, black paint and 3 coats of flex seal, the black absorbs UV Ray's and  keeps the trap from freezing  in in all but the very worst conditions, I also add rubber bumpers or pads to the bottom of the trap below the spool so the end doesnt get beat up when you set it on the ice OR use it to bust open the edges of the hole.

I have been reading some of  your posts about building your tip ups. I was wondering if you make the clips that hold the brass trip tube in place? Do you purchase them? I think I saw you have used some Jack Trap components in the past. Inspired me to upgrade some of my own and build some new ones that incorporate some of your upgrades.

Any thoughts / preferences on the cross style versus the H style ti ups?
