So, I've got a little time in the evenings so I decided to build another tip up( trap) for a friend..
Normally, when someone striper fishes with me their first time, I give them a custom striper plug... in this case, the angler is not a die hard striper nut( not yet anyway) but he is a die hard ice fisherman and a lot of fun to fish with.
so instead of a striper plug, he's getting a trap..
the wood is Ash, I cut it 30 BIG LINES long and 4 MEDIUM lines wide... the tube for the trigger is thin wall brass the trigger itself is bent out of 316 stainless … a hole is drilled 1/2 way up to facilitate the shell Gaddus S-3 220 grease for the tube ( the same grease used in jack traps..
Here are a few pictures, I'll update as I go..

Looking forward to joining the elite club of having a Roc custom built trap Joe, and looking forward even more to putting it on the ice next to yours again this season as well as some of the other great guys and ladies I've met on this site. Long live the Ice Shanty Family!

Love it Joe! When you retire and get real bored I want to commission you for a full set just to have. Love your work.
Excited to chum it up with all you deplorables again as well, hopefully more frequently than once a year
-
looks like another great build can't wait to see finished product. Would like to get out with a few of you guys this year seems like a great bunch I'll bring the beer!!
-
Well done Joe - l like the flag hook/split ring - seems like a good design.
Hope the season brings lots of ice and plenty of opportunity to take advantage of it!
-
Hopefully I'll be able to catch up with you guys again this year and see it in action! Very nice work as always, Roc!
-
kick ass
-
Lookin good Joe.
Mr Ray is gonna love it I'm sure
And I look forward to witnessing that this year at some point ;)

It felt good but Phew. ;D
Whatever it takes, right joe?

Glad to hear! Now you’ll be even more dangerous

Finished the last of the drilling and glued and pinned the stabilizers . All the cross braces and spool are through bolted using stainless or brass threaded inserts, nothing can work loose or swell when wet.
Now I get to take it all apart to samd, seal and Finnish..no more pictures until it's done..
I've added a stainless big bait clip for large pike or laker baits

Just a tiny update, traps have bee disassembled, sanded and sealed, sealer was dabbed in all the holes to seal the endgrain..I greased the tube today.. here's a picture of the procedure

Don’t be foolish, they’ll just tell Joe he owes them some. You know how this works by now
-
Looks amazing. Well done!
-
Very nice….looking forward to the day you post some Hogs caught on them Ray
-
Kudos `ol boy. That is some terrific engineering and quality manufacturing. I am a big fan of wooden traps and collect FishCrafters. Yours are as high quality as they get. Enjoy watching those flags fly and spools spin.
-

Yeah i have fished my whole life all by myself mostly. I deserve a set of those I think I'm :roflmao: :roflmao: entitled?
-

Ha, fair enough... But I suspect Joe knows how to deal with an entitled individual in a way we'd both respect....

Fine looking tip-up, great craftsmanship!

Curious about your choice of trigger mechanisms...I always struggle with this type when it's cold out and my gloves are on.
tight lines!

Put your thumb behind the trigger hook the flag with the other.. setting doesnt get any easier..
My question to you is ...do you bait your traps with your gloves on.

That's one nicely built tip up. Can't imagine one finer, actually.

Thank you, wait until you see the final product,
I'm still layering spar urethane at this point..2 more coats to go.
The lower half gets primer, black paint and 3 coats of flex seal, the black absorbs UV Ray's and keeps the trap from freezing in in all but the very worst conditions, I also add rubber bumpers or pads to the bottom of the trap below the spool so the end doesnt get beat up when you set it on the ice OR use it to bust open the edges of the hole.
-
I have been reading some of your posts about building your tip ups. I was wondering if you make the clips that hold the brass trip tube in place? Do you purchase them? I think I saw you have used some Jack Trap components in the past. Inspired me to upgrade some of my own and build some new ones that incorporate some of your upgrades.
Any thoughts / preferences on the cross style versus the H style ti ups?

I've used Jack trap parts in the past, but it gets expensive quickly, so I make or find a substitute, they still have the best alternative for stainless flag steel ..FWIW... without labor, they cost about $30 to build, less the line... but when your done, you have something custom that performs well in all conditions and will last a life time.
those are 3/16 brass routing clips.. I drill and trim to size.. I get them ( and most of my hardware from McMaster Carr) P/N 9488T16..
I'm glad people are following the build, it's the only reason I post it up here..
I prefer the cross style, I build them with a built in anti rock pad on the top cross piece, the bottom folds into it so it's a nice tidy package..
I made 6 "big boy 36"" H style, they are big and heavy and wider than a normal # 6" with a 22" H...they are actually a good foul weather tip up because of their weight, I cut squares of roofing rubber that slides over the upright for when snow is blowing and drifting into the trap hole.. but for most circumstance I use my 30" cross style with the 4" spools.. I have a set on mini ones that are 15", but because of their height, it make for a stiff trigger launch.. I use a 22" flag on them to add a softer release ( learned through trial and many errors) and also modified the trigger for a softer trip.. but on their best day they are not as sensitive or as stable and smooth as the 30" with the 4" spools.
-
Right down to the Part Numbers, you are a cut above Joe
-
Man Joe you go so in depth its great!! even a non skilled person could follow, and you keep it on even numbers so you don't have to explain how many little lines past the big line it is.. well done sir!!
-
Outstanding Joe! As always with your craftsmanship!

She's ready to fish, the threaded inserts were given a dab of polyurethane construction adhesive, the wind gaurd fashioned out of sheet titanium scrap I have in the shop, the spool are made by HT tackle and hold 1500' I fill them 2/3 full of green dot dacron, then top them off with 250' of 36' #,dacron, the bait clip is a stainless steel plating clip, it has rounded jaws made for holding film or thin X ray plates..the flag is from jack traps, I like their stainless steel, their flags are durable as well

Great work Joe!

looks great !

I never get enough of watching this process and seeing the end result Joe.
The only thing better is each year getting to watch them in action ;)

Fantastic craftsmanship! Love the small leveling pieces at the ends of high arms.
-
That’s Awesome !!
-
Is their a notch for that trigger rod on the cross stick or is it just opened on the wrong side. Looks like it would pinch the rod and not allow it to function freely. Other then that looks Awesome.
-
Great job Joe!! looks awesome love the color scheme and the flag

There is no " wrong side"I prefer to have the cross centered on the trigger side.. not behind it.. what are you talking about...nothing pinches anything...the trigger is 2 piece.. there is a wire inside the tube...the cross never touches it and if it did.. it would not matter.
-

color scheme kind of goes with the "stealth" bomber scheme. I hope he salutes that flag often!

I can assure you Joe, I have no intentions of cranking on the lumber hard enough to crush the trigger tube... A fella would have to be awefully hard on equipment to think that would be a concern...

The way it's set up there is a small gap , it cant hit it.. that tube is thick enough you would need a vice to crush it..Iv e built maybe 50 the same way
..all still fishing without issues.
We need ice!..forecast ain't looking favorable..we might end up.meeting at lake X and casting shiners on bobbers and eggs on a bubble so I can give you this thing before I'm old(er) and grey(er)

I knew that's how they were setup Joe, even without seeing it in the pics...
Looking at the cams, Lake x has lost everything it had yesterday... must have been a windy night...
Luckily I've grown more patient with my years, we will get after it soon enough.

I’ll most likely be there New Years like I have been for the last 15 years or so at my old faithful there inshore

For sure.. bring on the cold.
-
It says the temp will be 6* at my house Monday night. That’s a start!
-
Yup, getting cold after the storm... Looking forward to getting out again.
Walking out of the shop at 4 and it being as warm outside as it was inside was a buzzkill.

Felt like I should have been going striper fishing..

You bet. Can't wait to get out there again with this Motley crew. We need some ice to kick this thing off.
Damn, I'd walk three times as far as we did last trip, just to get on some ice right now!
Looking forward to see that reel screamin on the Bomber.

That's a hand that could beat a full house.. or put a whooping on a lake in a hurry under the right conditions..
Good news is my Knee has finally healed ...walking is good again...for now.
that wind today isn't helping the cause..
Dug out my gear last night.. found one of my missing jackers... guess I'll have to make another...tying leaders and hooks last night.. and finding all my stuff...I'll get Steve H fixed up tomorrow and hope to walk on water soon...
defiantly need a knuckleheads' gettogether a few times this season.
-
Glad to here you’re Bum wheel is on the mend my friend!

Glad to hear about the knee Joe.
You'll really run circles around the rest of us now..lol

As long as I dont pork it again..tore MCL ice fishing years ago, tweaked it getting on the wheeler last year when my creeper dug in and twisted the knee...walked in pain for 2 months.. took most of the summer to feel good again..

I use the term "knucklehead:" with the utmost respect, drawing the term from my favorite Harley motor... the Knuckle head!

-
It really is, Joe is operating on a higher level than most. The spooi is crazy smooth and the flag trip is so soft... Makes my Jacks look entry level.
-
Here's hoping for a successful first mission - though if it isn't it has to be Pilot Error and not a mechanical issue!

That was yesterdays test flight over waters she was not designed for (2 feet). After this weeks deep freeze, it'll be over the deep big waters it was built to land on... And yes, any failures will certainly be pilot error lol.

Sounds like you have been converted to a big lake cold water species guy, what happened to the So. NH Bass and Panfish guy?
Enjoy the flight..

Looking good.. if I can get the mosquito traps to trip that smooth, they will. Be ideal for shallow water fishing.. I'm working on it

I think we made a pretty good trade... thank you my friend

He's still here, just got a little bored with SW NH mud puddles. I'm still after the warm water critters, just in bigger better waters. I always manage to bump into great people when I'm on the big waters too, makes the 200 mile round trip more than worth it.

Those mosquito traps are impressive, cool to see a traditional cross style trap keeping the spool tucked up in the hole on 4" of ice.
Glad you like the hoodie Joe, stay warm brother.

Looking good, on both counts!

That makes sense - it is a chore for sure getting up to the bigger water, but as you said your efforts are being rewarded in multiple ways.
Have a great season

Im jealous stealth! Nice work Joe!
if you're a "good boy" this year, maybe Uncle Roccus will find a eel plug that you covet so much to send you..
-
By far the best metal lip plug I ever fished. Mine was jimmy's version but we know who taught him. I remeber my first casts with it. No confidence in its huge size. That changed quickly!!!
I lost the last ones I had to bass smashing them at a breachway jn waves so large I couldnt recover the fish without drownimg. Theres one wedged deep between the rocks at weakapaug...what a plug!
