Any "Hams" out there?
« on: Dec 29, 2003, 07:23 PM »
I am an amateur radio operator who also likes to ice fish.  I was wondering if there was any other "hams" out there that might want to get together on the air and talk ice fishing?
Good luck and Happy New Year.

Hey Billditrite,
Thanks for the response. Yeah I hear it a bit.  I even got a T-shirt from the original "Cheers" bar in Boston with that on it.  It comes in handy at work though, seeing as the company is on this kick of having a label for everything and everything in its place.  I just wear the shirt and I'm cool.  Too bad I had to give up drinking beer a couple of years ago or I could really live the part.
Party on dude!
Good luck.

KB8VMQ here Don't talk much on the radio very much any more. To much time fishing and working. What spare time I used to spend on the radio is now spent on the computer.

I had a licence in the '60s WA8FBI. I let it laps a long time ago. I was real active on 20M CW. I still have a Vibroplex Presentation key. Is CW dead now?

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responses.  I was just wondering if anybody was active because of all the advances recently with amateur radio.  IRLP and Echolink allow you to link VHF-UHF repeaters via the internet to other repeaters around the world.  So if you were icefishing near a repeater in Michigan you could link to a repeater in N.Y and talk just from an HT.  Also because of LSI with semiconductors, backpack HF radios are now smaller than the average CB.  I heard one guy this year from Michigan operating 40 Meters SSB from his Treestand!
I figured if we got a bunch of guys from different states we could keep in touch between Ice shanty gatherings like we are having in N.Y.
Good luck to all.
