Ok here's my dilema..I have been on fishcation for since dec 22..I. have fished all over this bloody state. Am I the only guy out here using a spud? Mind you I weigh in at 140 with my gear! I've been on about 4 lakes that have soft punky 1 1/2" ice and guys are fishing..ok fine..but then they just start wandering around and drilling holes? A half turn with a auger is scary..why not spud where your walking? I think you guys should wise up..I left a couple lakes and tried telling the fellas but they got this?  Hope you don't end up a statistic, or cost a first responder a life as well! Good luck

A spud is a must have at first and last ice. 

I see people wandering around with their augers all the time on less than stellar ice.

  Looks like you did good.   I fell through in 18 fow some years ago.  Since then I am cautious.   I got out Sunday on 1.5-2.5" and knew I was pushing it.   It wasn't over my head though.      Use that spud, but even more important to me is to not go alone on first ice.   Good luck and stay safe?

Actually there was five guys..2 with vexilars who caught their limit each and 3 guys without who caught only 6 between the 3..I only cleaned 8..I'm not greedy and don't even eat fish too often.but thanks..btw I have a copy of the fishing guide and no the regs..you guys are the best! Sorry for whom I've offended..let's count your bags in the freezer! Don't be a richard!

I was going to give him a hard time about the 29 fish but I could care less and I am in school to be a DNR officer there could have been four guys tossing in on that pile and they all had crappy days

I was on 2 inchs of ice last night. That thickness was'nt uniform around the whole lake. You could here the cracking as people were checking out other spots. Here's my gripe, why in the world would you bring a child out on questionable ice and let them run around without a care in the world??? There were a couple guys out there not paying attention to what there kids are up to. Thankfully nothing happened,

I think you are supposed to send the kids out first to test the ice.  That's just strategy, everyone knows that.
