Sourdough Jack Starter
« on: Feb 04, 2010, 12:58 PM »
Just got 20-30 year old starter form sourdough
Jack Mabee in the back of old cookbook (got it off e-bay)

It worked great

This will be my 2nd starter. The first one
I got from friends in AK a few years ago
It is over 100 year old (when it was started)
ITs called Bell starter.

The Sourdough Jack starter is also over 100 years old.

Waiting for some Carles 1847 starter to come in the mail
That will make 3

I tried the Jack starter for pancakes

Well It made great Pancakes
I used Dick Pronekeys (alone in the wilderness)
Recipe for the Flap Jacks

1 cup starter
5 tbls. flour (3/4 cup)
1/2 cup powdered milk
3 tbls sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
pinch salt
1 tbl oil or bacon drippings
water to make the batter as you like it

note no egg. If you want add one
Makes about 7 average size pancakes

It had a nice sour tast but not over powering
