cooking on ice
« on: Dec 23, 2009, 10:58 PM »
I'm looking at getting a small stove for cooking brats etc. while on the ice.

What's better Propane or the white gas?

I'm thinking it's going to be propane, but I would like opinions on what everyone uses.

I like Propane and propane accesories.  I am already taking out a heater that runs on propane, just get a tee and a few hoses, wala, no messy liquid fuel to mess with.  IMO :icefish:  tight lines, tight lines

Propane all the way.  Why take a chance on contaminating the water with a spill of a petroleum product.

The propane is your best and easiest bet. The gas is for very very cold temperatures I think.

Like it was said before put a tee on a bulk propane bottle and run heat in the shack while you are cooking outside.  I have done it and it makes things easier, one less thing to carry out.

I think those white-fuel products should be banned. I have seen so many nasty fires from the pump style stoves and lanterns it makes you sick. From spilled fuel igniting or the tube/tank falling out of the appliance etc.
My biggest negative about the 1lb. cylinders is the mess of them being left behind littering the place up.

More so with camping I use the distribution post with a bulk cylinder and have the lantern on top and either a bbq or stove connected as well.

My last trip out I had a small bbq for my daughters hot dogs and the big outdoor cooker deep frying fish and chips for the rest of us.

Later,
Glen

propane, Got one at walmart that works on the 1 pound green bottles
Love it. For Back packing I use white gas for weight and bulk
But if you are going out for a day the propane is the way to go.
I use a buddy heater and you only have to get one kind of fuel.
If you have a bulk tank so much the better.

propane is the ticket. no mess on the ice or in your vehicle. we use a small grill from wally world. the option of the upper rack is always a plus. you can run it off 1# btls or split off a large tank.
