Preferred handle length for lake trout and pike rods
« on: Oct 29, 2020, 05:35 PM »
I am building up a couple few rods for Lakers and large pike. The rods will be 42" and 48" long. I am spinning my own cork so I have the ability to adjust the length of the handle as I see fit.

I dont get out for lakers all to often and most my big pike are on tip ups. So looking for some opinions here.

The longer of the two will be baitcasters and the other might be spinning.

Cheers

I think it comes down to whether you need the handle length to leverage off from your forearm or not.

I own one of the Elliot rods the 42" Siscowett in the bait casting rod.  It was listed at 44" but actually measured to a tad bit longer than 46" total length.  I also have an old Jason Mitchell 38" special rod in spinning that was the predecessor of his mackinaw rods.  It's like a full open water handle rod and is easily leveraged off the forearm if needed.  Both rods have about 7" of rear handle grip.

Just put one handle in the clamp and the rear handle is 6.5. It’s on my buddies rod so I can see how I like it for mine

I don’t think I will be going any shorter then the 6.5”

Next one I am thinking 8.

Here's the handle on one of my custom 42" sticks.
