Artic fire tip up by frabill
« on: Jan 17, 2015, 02:35 PM »
Frabills artic fire tip ups are on sale at my local fleet farm so I picked up a few. I've got one on the ice so far and for the money they don't seem to be to bad. Anyone else have experience with this particular model?

I picked up a few of those there couple of years ago. Did what they were supposed to do for me, I didn't have any probs with them. I did put some of my Teflon PTFE oil on them, though.

Still one of my favorites.  Never had any problems and have stayed smooth

i have some of these.  the spring that holds the flag could be a bit stiffer, but other than that, they do what they're supposed to do.  i always buy at end of season clearance.  my biggest problem though, is that i want to get out and test the new gear when i can't!

When I first bought tip ups I was going to get some of them but I ended up getting a set of dog bones. I love them but I also fish with guys who use those and they love them. As long as they work use them!!!

I like them.  I liked them better before they cheapened up the manufacturing process a couple years ago.  If you ever see some at a yard sale with red plastics instead of black snatch them up.

Not talking about the base, those are about the same.  On the mechanism there is a plastic piece at the top and bottom of the tube plus a spacer, and then the one that screws on above the T-bar, on the newer ones these pieces are black, on the older ones they will be red.  I have a pair of the blacks and they work fine, but they are more prone to leaking and corrosion than the others.

Work great for me until you get in nasty weather below zero.  They tighten up and don't spin well.  At 20 below zero, they do not turn hardly at all.  I have 4, and all do the same.  I use my Beaver Dams mostly, so I use the Artic Fires for when friends and family come with, and that's usually on nicer days, so they work perfect for them.

I have been meaning to clean them out and relube them to see if that helps, but they were supposed to have come with Frabills sub zero grease in them.  Might try HT Blue lube or Beaver Dams grease.

I find loads of beaver dams at garage sales for dirt cheap. Check them out in the summer.  The older ones are better quality than the new ones as well, so it's a win/win!
