Man Bolts Antlers to Dead Doe, Gets $400 Fine, 10 Days in Jail

BURLINGTON, Vt. — A man who bolted antlers to the head of a dead doe and posed for a photograph with the deer was fined $400 and jailed for game violations.

Marcel Fournier, 19, shot the deer the evening of Nov. 22 and used lag bolts and epoxy to attach a 10-point rack, officials said. He then checked in the kill as lawful game at Barnie's Market.

It's illegal to kill an antlerless deer, and it's also illegal to hunt at night.

The Concord resident admitted to the killing and led a game warden to the deer's remains after an anonymous caller alerted authorities. Fournier said he had "quite a time" drilling and fastening the antlers, authorities said.

Game warden David Gregory said the antlers didn't look or feel right.

"When you grabbed them, you'd feel movement," he said.

Col. David LeCours, chief warden of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the size of the antlers relative to the size of the deer seemed off.

"Something wasn't natural about them, in addition to the fact that they weren't natural," he said.

Fournier was sentenced to 10 days in jail Feb. 18 for taking a deer in a closed season. He won't qualify for a state hunting, fishing or trapping license for at least three years.

LeCours said add-on antlers are the stuff of legend, but that it's the first documented case of it in Vermont.

hahahaha thats the stupidest thing i heard in awhile....jeez i bet his neighbors are laughin yet! Should give him an extra 10 days for stupidity....is a buck really that hard to find there? if so i think he better give up hunting or hunt somewhere else! id like to see a feller try that with a 65" moose rack! brings it to the check in: "how come these are so loose?" I like the penalty that they gave him .We had some guys caught 3 times in 3 weeks with way over their limit and got a slap on the wrist they event had a local pub start a fundraiser to pay their fine but dec stopped it but were still made out to be the fools because they got off so easy.Whitch is the problem with our area, i hear guns go off year round at night whitch means someone is taking deer down the road (we find the carcases ) but nothing is done , Guys catch walleyes durring the spawn run before the season nothing is done dec has been informed several times to my knoledge along with the sherifs office by the people that own the land but again nothing is done. A local farmer had someone dump garbage in one of his fields he looked through it found the name and address on some mail turned it in and was told by a deputy that they dont know if the owner of the mail dumped it or someone else had done it so he had to dispose of it or he would be fined for it!

He check in the deer as legal at Barney's Market. An anonymous caller tipped off the authorities. Only then did the authorities examine it very closely.

I think this guy has done this many times before and someone figured the scam out and did the right thing.
He goes out and shoots whatever. He checks it in at a place where they're going to just look at it and let it go without checking sex or odd features.

I think he's a poacher that got sloppy.
