Title: Lake Arthur 2022/23
Post by: jaeger80 on Nov 22, 2022, 05:46 PM
Another season is coming soon fellas!  This is not an ice report per se, just some pictures from the lake today that look promising.  Muddy Creek was capped to the mouth, prop area was capped to the mouth, and all the bays on the Old 422 leg were all capped.  We all know it will be gone by this weekend, but let's hope it comes back to stay soon.  Hope to see all my ice fishing dudes out there this year...fingers crossed for early ice!

New to hard water fishing... What species does the lake hold?
Title: Re: Lake Arthur 2022/23
Post by: jaeger80 on Dec 15, 2022, 05:03 PM
6 trillion channel cats and 5" bluegills.

But seriously, pretty much all of the PA species.  Finding them is the hard part.

I imagine MC should be locked up this morning. Not sure it's going to be cold enough to be on the ice on christmas eve, but after Christmas weekend it may be go time if the weather holds

Title: Re: Lake Arthur 2022/23
Post by: jaeger80 on Dec 22, 2022, 02:02 PM
I just drove past the entirety of the lake. Most of it looks like it's capped. There appears to be at least an inch of rainwater on top of the ice. That makes it look like there's no ice, but I believe that should all free solid into hard black ice tonight with the lows. There are some patches of open water on the main body lake

There is a ton of rain water on the ice. And they're dumping at the overflow... I'm guessing they AGAIN waited for ice to form before lowering the lake

Post by: Icefishingjames on Dec 24, 2022, 03:49 PM
Tried to drive down to upper 528 but a tree fell across the road. Walked 400 yards or so down to the launch. Looks like the wind blew all the rain water to the upper and lower 528 bank and it all froze into junk white ice. Spud out 50 feet and spud was going through in 2 hits. Was about 2 inches of snow sitting on the ice in most places. I would guess less then 3 inches of mostly white ice. Disappointed , between the snow and rain blown on that end of the lake I guess hurt the ice. Drove down to dead end and some sections open along the shore line. Ice was like a jigsaw puzzle sections of junk ice . Looks like it broke up and refroze yesterday maybe? Deep snow drift along the bank, over a foot in some sections. Big open sections near the church so didn't bother.

Definitely 2 access points to the lake from the church parking lot.  You won’t miss the lineup of vehicles.

Bass/pike sounds fun to catch! I took my retired parents out today, but all I know how to catch is a bunch crappie! I set some tip ups out , but we only mustered 1 bass. We must be in the wrong part of the lake

(I’ve always owned orange ones) As soon as I brought it up off the bottom this 17” one nailed it. Pic is a little misleading. The grub stinger hangs a foot below the treble hook.

Lucked into a nice school of crappie up Shannon's Dam today. Brought home 14 fish, with the biggest at 14 inches. Most around 10 or 11 inches. Measured about 7 inches of ice. Too bad most of that will be ruined next week.

Kills me to say this, but harvested. She must have hit her head on the bottom of the ice or something, as I spent 5 minutes trying to get her back down the hole. I can count on one hand how many crappie I've harvested from this lake in my life and its usually because of gut hook/bled out etc. I am all for c&r , especially good genetics in a time when this lake is suffering.  None of this fish will go to waste.

Not a thing wrong with that, I was just curious.  Its a dandy of a crappie brother...

Post by: MumbleSEED on Dec 29, 2022, 07:50 AM
Crappie were enjoying some minnows finally yesterday after we waited for the bait truck to show up at O'Donnells.  Size of crappie were better yesterday even though my biggest was still caught on micro plastic.  Ice was not getting too sloppy was getting colder near the lake so might firm up.  I'd like to get on there New Years Eve but only time will tell.  Enjoy it while you guys can, might be a week or two after this warm spell?!?

Ice still around 5+ inches.

Be safe folks!

Saw a beautiful pike come out of Muddy Creek for a few pics and back down she went. Just under 35” but with major girth. Her sides touched the entire hole when she came out! Congrats if your on here! It’s been a great year for the 2 days of fishing I got to do. Lol! Overnight low of 43 with tons of water blowing in the wind on top isn’t good. Shorelines are softening and anywhere there’s a stream or spring near will be thin ice. Be safe if your getting another day out of it.

stylish boots, but if not the "mickey mouse" or muck artic boot style you could be in wet feet mode? ive found in the 45 years ive been ice fishing the sorel type boots will leak if you fish in slush or standing water.its been slush for years now not like the bogger freezin days of the past,i wish you well

I wear Norfin boots which are made for ice fishing and are excellent.  I was never able to find surplus Mickeys in my size and I was in the army long after they stopped issuing them.  If you found them in your size I'd say you're in luck!  Then again my Norfins weigh ounces and the Mickeys are like cinder blocks so I guess there are some trade offs...

True.  We've had some nights in the low 20s here (I live 10 mins from Muddy), but the day time temps aren't helping ice production.  And of course were in yet another warm swing with rain.

It's been a total bummer for this waky winter..
A dear friend of ours had a hip replacement and couldn't ice fish this winter..
He picked a good season to heal, this year.

The bays on the east side of the lake are skimming over again and it has been barely under freezing. All the snow we got dumped on us must have created a slush layer on the surface. It should freeze up tonight.

Mknott,

You may have to lower your 6" of black ice standard if you want to walk on hard water this year brother.  I don't think we're going to get that, but here's hoping...

Looking for at least 5-6" clear ice jaegar. I'll go up to edinboro lake if I have to. I don't currently have a float suit. Just not taking a chance on 2-3".

my fam eats there often,we live 5 or so minutes from there, its up the hill from north park lake which is barely skimmed in places :( its 43 degrees here and rainingggggggggggggggg gg  >:( we got more rain than snow so it goes?weather man got it wrong again.as for moraine/lake arthur my motto is "you cant dress for the lake in your drive way its always colder at the lake".so we need to wait and see if muddy creek tightens up.with the warm water influx who knows?uasually its cold water influx thats why it freezes first and frozen last, my opinion false news not fact checked.its now moving from first ice to midwinter doldrums, lots of fronts and jaw locking moons. oh well GOD is still on the throne amen.

I really thought we were going to have ice soon, but based on the weather we had this weekend and what I see in the extended forecast, I’m starting to believe the people that were saying we aren’t going to get back on the water again this season.

I don’t ever remember 2 winters in a row where you only got 1 week of ice fishing. It may come back in February, but it certainly didn’t last year. Wonder if the fish commission would let you float your 5 tip-ups in inflatable rings and chase them by boat.  ;D

Big creek chubs & suckers a couple feet off the bottom. Or spoons and white spinner baits fished as slow as you can and still have action to them.
